  • keying out a black background?

Posted by Jon Iverson on July 1, 2009 at 12:40 pm

I have a moving object (bird) that I want to isolate from a background that it totally black. After reading about keylight, I decided to try it. However, when I use the dropper to click on the black background, nothing appears to be happening. “Status” shows all white with nothing keyed out. The goal is to remove the black background and replace it with an image. I’ve tried adjusting all of the parameters in keylight as recommended, but also to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jon

Keylight is a chromakeyer. You want to use one of the linear keyers since black has little o no chroma information.

    Hi…

I’m no expert, but I use keylight a lot, just in case you are doing something odd this was the best tutorial video I found on it.

I also have got into the perhaps unnecessary habit of making my comp background a bright color, so I then know its not black/grey/white. It helps me not to get confused with the black/white status option if I am tired and part of it really has gone transparent.

Try one of the luma keyers available with AE or you could try Unmult, which is a free plugin originally intended to do transparency for lens flares on black.

Are you sure the black is actually black, and not an alpha channel? Have you tried toggling the switch for the transparency checker-box pattern?
