This seems so simple that there has to be a way of doing it. I just can’t find it!

I have a simple sillheotte mask shaped like a man’s body. If I want to animate it so that his arm moves across his body, it creates a “cut out” over his body. Why, despite all the mask options (lighten, difference etc.) can I not get it to just stay all black?

Any help much appreciated. I’m in AE CS3.

I’d just create one mask for the body and the other one for the hand.

Two masks will work, probably more flexible.
But the question approaches masking incorrectly. You’re not masking out three dimensional objects when rotoscoping. You are simply drawing a line around the shape of the entire thing you are masking.

Thanks, but I figured 2 seperate masks would be suggested. It’s just still seems more complicated than necassary. And it’s certainly a *less* flexible solution.

    To clarify, I’m not rotoscoping:

It’s just a simple figure. If I wanted his arm to turn into a tentacle and go across him, is there no easier way to get it not to go all “checkerpattern”? This may seem a little stupid, but what if I wanted to make a silheotte octupus?

    Thanks

Pre-compose, then use the puppet tool to animate your figure.
