Caution: I could be fantasizing.
Like Jeremy, I don’t have the camera, don’t have the deck, shoot, never shot HDV.
Here’s a hack and I have no idea if it works these days. This is how we used to do it back int he Olden Days before QT could handle four channels.
You’ll be capturing audio only, uncontrolled device, using audio outputs from the deck through some interface that will get your audio into the Mac. That might mean hooking the XLRs on the deck to the phone inputs on a DVCAM so you can get the audio out via FW.
You will then have to manually sync the 3/4 audio-only clip to the video. And you can count on the sync drifting after a few minutes.bogiesan

July 9, 2009 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Question about glow and color effects on a rain layerThere is no layer mapping function in CC Rain so you can forget random colorization for individual particles directly in the simulation.
Extracting the rain particles from the layer itself and applying alpha effects such as glows will require some precomping and careful alpha construction from copies or iterations of the rain output.I’d render a rain movie and play with the reimported movie rather than trying to mess with the filter in a live layer.
If you examine Rain’s output, you can see that some of the CC particle systems can create similar particle images. They may be easier to colorize.
There are other particle systems that can create randomly colored particles. The only one I have is part of Delerium. A bit expensive and they still render rather slowly but DigiEffects makes great toys.

[Bill Triplett] “What then, is the best way to render one minute segments as an option? “
I did not address this because it’s not a good idea. Stitching them together is more difficult than you might imagine and the added struggle to set the ins and outs takes much longer than simply doing the long render.
Without knowing much more about your project it’s easy for me to simply say your experience with coping with the limits of your individual system and its rendering capabilities have not caught up with your design ambitions.
You could be scaling things inappropriately. You could be stacking your layer inefficiently. You could be processing tons of extractive effects that should be prerendered.

the same question was copied and pasted onto apple.com and, frankly, those terrible FCP elitists had a lot more fun.
What’s the difference between an Edit Monkey and a Monkey Edit?

Many long renders can be improved by precomposing properly and then pre-rendering certain effects and layers and bringing them back in as movies.
There are some effects that simply require huge render times because of their look-back or look-forward settings. Any particle that has a life requires looking back to determine where to draw the trail. If you have a couple million particles on the screen, you’re going to get bogged down.
Some effects should be applied to precomps instead of individual layers. I
Lights in the comp will each load the engine tremendously and the effect on rendering time of multiple lights is exponential.

Yar, we see this same question about once a week. You can search for similar terms and find dozens of threads with helpful suggestions on how to optimize your performance, lower your expectations, and change your workflows to accommodate your system’s limitations.
I have no patience for these discussions. Back when AE was CoSA, my Macintosh IIfx took a weekend to render ten seconds of one effect on one layer. I managed.bogiesan

July 8, 2009 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Plugin that will let me RENDER vectorscopes and waveforms??Shoot it.
In the olden days we’d set up a camera and point it at the scopes.
There are reatime scopes available in many applications for video but the best would be pipe the signal through real scopes.bogiesan

If you search for KINETIC TEXT you will find literally thousands of samples on the video social sites. it is a very popular project theme for AE, Motion, and 3D students as well as professionals who are experimenting.
You can lost in this stuff for days.

John,
You will never hear from Apple.
Crashing in Motion can be traced to several things and you have provided no information that might help us debug that with you.Open the manual, do the tutorials, look all over the Net for Motion help sites and advanced tutorials, and search for “comparing After Effects and Motion.” It’s a popular (and largely pointless) discussion topic because Motion will never replace After Effects any more than Xcel will ever replace Word.
If you use FCP, you will want to become fluent with Motion for certain things. But if you enjoy using After Effects, you may never learn to like Motion. I certainly don’t and I’ve been trying to get some love for Motion for many years.

Does it crash at the same place?
If so, you’ve got some bad media at that point.
