DVDSP4 can be set to run with Qmaster for encoding. You have Qmaster. It totally sucks, truly evil Apple software for which they should be punished.
FCP cannot be set to run on networked rendering alth we’ve been screamign about it since V1.

You can invest in better, faster machines, add more RAM or pursue hardware solutions such as Cinewave that support real time effects but they all carry heavy maintenance and compatibility burdens that, AFAICT, far outweigh any perceived productivity gains.

If I may be so bold, your employers are clueless. It wasn’t all that long ago that a weekend was required to render 30 seconds of video.

7 gigs could represent all of your mail, iTunes, photos, and everything else that is assigned to your suer acocunt including applications.

You should be able to view the drive, the Panther presence shouldn’t matter at all. Sorry, no clue there. Can you still start from the Panther drive? You can always run Disk Utility on it from the tiger drive or from the install disk. Can’t hurt.

Yeah, I’ve seen this on my system. Sometimes I get the names of applications stuck out on the desktop, left behind after the Dock retracts. Usually a restart was all it took to get things back to normal. You didn’t indicate you’d tried that.

AFAIK, that’s how nests are done in FCP5. Dumb not to have any user control but that seems to be it.
I’m pretty sure your only choice is to unlink the resulting pair of tracks and delete one of them.

Merely converting to AVI on a PC might not do the job. You must use a codec that is present on both the PC and the Macintosh.
There are some expensive Mac tools that will do the job for you but the easiest way and cheapest is to contact whoever created the file and ask them to give it to you in a better, more conventional format. Like tape.

Look carefully at the turnkey systems and see what they are specifying in terms of peripherals, that’s where everyone wants to scrimp and that’s where everyone gets hammered.

Off-the-shelf FCP systems are easy to build. You do not the bleeding edge to get into the business any more than you need a fancy computer or media editing desk. You do not need the dual-core G5 to do DV from the Canon nor do you really need it for HDV. You don’t need 8 gigs of RAM, 4 or 6 will do fine. You do not need an expensive graphics card unless you intend to charge lots of money for your Motion work. What you REALLY need is 80-100 gigs for a system drive and another 250 for your media and a way to offload and backup. You really need audio monitor speakers. You really need spare batteries, a good tripod and a protective case for your camera. You really need a Sony DSR-11 deck and a good video monitor. Why are you choosing the Canon? That’s a decision you must carefully weigh but if you’re not going to be using its advanced features, they are a waste of money.

Shop carefully but you will be able to locate many used G5s in the dual-2.0 to 2.7g range.
By the time you’re ready for HDV, you’ll be ready for a second Macintosh.

All I can tell is that I’ve seen similar posts and, if I recall correctly, they all went unanswered. We do not know if it’s a bug or just a quirk of individual machines. Option-dragging is a subtle clipboard function so you could be getting clobbered by whatever was in the clipboard from a previous application or another function. Sorry, no clue.
But you should drop a note to Apple. The support>discussions>FCP area on apple.com has a feedback folder. State your case clearly, it seems to help.
