what’s an Avid? (Rhetorical.)

I’ve never used an Avid so I have no idea how it works for mutlicamera edits. I can tell you this: The FCP multiclip function is nothing like Avid’s and, out of the box, it’s lame and overly-complex. There rae at least eight stops you have to make within the interface to get basic functionality out of FCP Mutliclip. It’s not easy, but you can set the audio to stick with some tracks or follow the video and you can make all cameras play in synch in the Viewer with the online switcher in the Canvas. It’s unbelievably silly. But possible.

Why is EXPORT not favorable?

If I was making a habit of going to AVI (which codec?) I’d render out of AE at the highest possible rez in Quicktime and then use Cleaner or Compressor (or Squeeze or etc) to do the AVI. That way, I’ve always got a useful copy of the work locally.
But that’s just me. Sorry, probably didn’t help at all.

It’s a very weird issue.
If the clip has been rendered in your timeline, when you export, you just export the rendered media. If you’re working in DV, there is no alpha support so, even if you set the output for millions-plus, there is no alpha information.
You can export your effects to the Animation codec with alpha as long as it is not rendered. Animation is the only readily available and widely accepted codec that supports an alpha. (Umm, I think there is at least one other, dunno, never used it.)

I think Tom Wolsky and Jerry Hofmann came up with other ways of doing this but this is simple and it always works so I have never bothered to learn another way of doing it.

You’re trying to use canned effects for custom transitions. Can’t be done. You can put a border on some wipe effects and most third party effects but you only get one color (or you can keyframe one color to change into another color).

It’s very difficult to explain creating custom mattes but it’s a terrific bunch of fun. Why don’t you try to explain what you’d like to have happen on the screen.

Go ahead and repair permissions on your startup drive and, using Disk Utility, try to verify the other drive. You might want to repair it but run verify first.

I hope you get other suggestions so DO NOT do this one first.

Are you comfortable opening your Macintosh? Taking all reasonable precautions and proper steps, disconnect the power from your scratch drive.

When you open the project, all the media will be offline. Save a copy of the project and then start saving it out in smaller projects as chunks or reels. You don’t want more than about 2 ours of media in any single chunk.

Shut it down and reconnect the drive.
