Best to do it Flash.

Where are you seeing this? What monitor? What part of the FCP interface?
Our usual response is that you can’t evaluate interlaced footage on a progressive, reduced quality display such as the Canvas in FCP. You must play out to an interlaced video monitor. Correction: You must play out to a video monitor that matches your target output, whatever that is, which you cannot tell us.

You cannot calibrate a portable for video accuracy, forget it.
To calibrate between printers for your Photoshop work can be researched in any PS forum and you can start by opening the Color Management topic in Mac OS Help. You will need a $100 to $1500 monitor spider system.I’d forget the whole thing and rely on color accuracy on a monitor designed for the task like Apple Cinema or LaCie.

Oh, I now get to assume this is the first time you’ve ever prepared a budget. There are software tools, mostly for the PC, designed specifically for this task; they’re really cool. If you want to have a credible presentation to your backers, buy a copy. Expensive because it is a niche product.bogiesan

Aaron’s tutorial may offer you the mechanical underpinnings. Attaching the coordinates of the signature path to the effect point of the end of a laser beam effect is easy, too. The tough part, the stuff that separates that QualFab junk from real art lies in the subtleties only photographers and effects designers understand. The edges of the metal retain heat, the sparks fly (or not), smoke rises (or not), the beam changes color where smoke enters the light path, the etched piece falls with a bang and raises a cloud of dust, the sparks fall to the ground and bounce (or not).
You need Foam to creat the smoke, CC Particle Systems to create the flying sparks, CC Particle Wolrd to create sparks that strike a flow and bounce or stick, Beam or Lightning or Advanced Lightning to create the laser beam, Lens Flare to create the glowing beam spot, Shatter to produce some extrusion and additional flying sparks and eventually to allow the etched out piece to drop.
You throw time at it.

Try trashing all of the cache files. Rendering issues are usually caused by insufficient free drive space. He'll need about 15 gigs free on a 1.5T system, if my math is correct. Ask him to stop whatever he's doing and figure out his worst case scenario recovery plan. If he turns on his machine tomorrow and the project comes up as corrupt, damaged or simply gone, what is he going to do? Is there a backup of his project files? Does he have his tapes? Solve those issues before proceeding. Break the project down into at least two reels, it's a standard operating procedure with large projects. The division can be totally arbitrary.
