August 29, 2007 at 5:52 pm in reply to: AE Render = Bad Quality in FCP

[Alex Kuzelicki] “I’ve searched for the answer, inside out. All settings seem to match, Quality is at its highest… though I do still need to render. Mmm? < Your AE output settings match your FCP sequence settings PRECISELY? Then there should be no rendering, so this is your first place to look REALLY hard. Are you attempting to include an alpha? > Strangely, when I play the source clip just on my computer – out of Final Cut – the quality is great. < You mean withing Quicktime Player? Or some other application? That's because QT is just a player, it will adapt to your codec. But FCP's Canvas is a viewer that shows processed video being handled by trancoders and filters. The Canvas is the ouput of FCP, it is not a viewer for your video files. > But take the same clip into FCP and, straight away, it looks crappy. < You will need to define "crappy." The term is meaningless by itself. My hair is crappy sometimes but you might find it completely cool. > What am I missing? (Besides intelligence)”

Not at all, we were all new at this at one time.

One of the things that give traditional stop motion work its personality and style is randomness. If you have shot live video and simply time remap it, it might be predictable to the point of being sterile.
Eschew mediocrity in the pursuit of style: Introduce a few frames that are out of sequence, double-shot or misaligned.

August 28, 2007 at 10:42 pm in reply to: Shatter Text jaggy

    >Is this a problem of Shatter or something else. < Sorry, not at my AE machine at the moment so I may not have this correct. Yes, that's a bit of a problem with Shatter's engine. Shatter can be used to approximate 3D extruded objects as they might come form a dedicated 3D modeler but Shatter has limitations. You can get around it by starting with a much larger layer than you need and zooming back from it with the camera controls. This essentially makes the jaggies less noticeable. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Interesting and I bow to anyone who can write Expressions in their sleep like this, Yikes.

There are also some PUFF presets in several particle plugins and in Apple Motion. Might even be one in in AE visible via Bridge.

But I’m still an old fashioned guy; I say, got out out shoot some heavily sidelit talcum or gypsum dust against a black curtain.

Most winderz hack and slash sites will have many weird ways to do this. One foolproof and idiotproof way is to buy and install an application like DatViz’s MacDrive on the PC.

August 24, 2007 at 3:28 pm in reply to: Quicktime for DVD

    > The client wants to send the video out to a local DVD authoring company in their area, and they’ve asked me to provide the show as a quicktime file. What’s the best way of doing this? I expect the show will be about 5-7 minutes in length. Do you think this well fit on a DVD? They are an out of town client. Thanks.
< We may have confused DVD authoring with trying to send the authoring company a DVD. Use an external hard drive to hold the 8-10 gig file. Breaking it up onto DVDs should be simple and they should be able to reassemble it easily. In my world, this doesn't happen. Send it to them as a single file, exported from the timeline, in the format is which you are editing, to and external FW drive. Ship the drive to the DVD authoring company. Umm, call them first, find out how they prefer to receive your big file. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

August 24, 2007 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Third Party Scrolling Text

Photoshop or Illustrator are great for creating the text pages. After Effects will create and absolutely crystal clear and lossless alpha file with frame and field blending and motion blur.

But, depending on the format in which you are editing and releasing, rendering in FCP is still going to be an issue for you and your producers.
