  • Making DVDs from analog tape sources etc.

Posting about a hardware need in the form of a survey/advice question. I am looking to buy a stand alone DVD recorder that will directly convert VHS, BetaSP, and other analog/digital tape sources etc. to DVD. Is there a preferred make and model number that professionals prefer? Thanks in advance for whatever leads/advice/whatever you can offer.

I use a Panasonic DVD stand-alone burner. It works OK for quick window burns or one-offs of an edit for quick client approval. The one I have also has an HDD drive in it, which is nice for saving things for additional client dubs.

The quality is good, but Compressor/DVD studio pro is better as it also gives you ways to create professional looking menus vs. the Panny which is basic text.

The Panasonic DMR series are the most reliable and best picture quality in my opinion. I’ve been using a DMR-E30 for the last 5 years and its still going strong.

I have also heard the Pioneer models are nice.

We have a Pioneer DVR-310 that we’ve used for a few years. It does the job very nicely. You can adjust the bit rate and, therefore, the quality (and length) of the DVD. The only annoying thing about this unit is it doesn’t make auto starting DVDs. The user has to hit play or menu on their player.

Want cheap? Investigate the series of DVD recorders from Lite-On.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
