The drive format usually only affects writing to the drive but try copying one of the files to your Mac and then try to import it.

Not following your workflow. Export your rendered clip as self-contained and run the self-contained clip through compressor. That should work. Should.

There are a bunch of FxPlug filters in FCP (they came from Motion 3) that either crash my FCP or come up with a “filter failed to render” warnign on a red screen. They won’t go through Compressor, either. But the same filter applied within Motion works fine.

Are you a good apple or a bad apple?
You killed my sister, the bad apple, by dropping your set of manuals on her so that must mean you’re a great bad apple.

Digital Asset Management is a huge and over-hyped marketplace these days. Everyone’s trying to maximize return by repurposing previously leveraged assets. DAM is fairly easy to implement but designing your catalog’s taxonomical structure is much more difficult than the sellers of these products would have you believe.

The recommendations for products you have gotten here are helpfu,l but, my gosh, without a thorough demonstration on your site using your material and your servers it’s painfully simple to make a really BAD decision, even on cheap products.

All I can tell you is to stay away from Canto Cumulus. It is a prime example of everything that is evil and disgusting in the DAM marketplace. The guys who make Cumulus owe everyone an apology.

Judging by the huge number of posts on Motion’s behavior and response times, it looks to me like it’s a major issue with Apple. There are some suggested workarounds (scroll down and look for promising threads or search) but I usually start disabling filters and whole groups in order to gain performance. Not even shifting rez way down seems to help on my system which is quite a few clicks below yours in power and speed.

There is a section in the manual on how to pick up some speed. It’s all nonsense AFAICT.

You’ll get some soon, patience. Meantime, explore the search function, we see a similar post about once a month and we’ve dealt with it in dozens of different ways. There is no single approach and much depends on your need for realism and style or how your shot fits into the entire sequence. Do you need smoke and ashes? Do you need ultra-realism? (Might be easier to shoot it like we used to do in the Olden Days, back in the early 80s.)

You can also explore theanvel.com for Dean’s interesting and boneheaded simple fire/burning effects. His files were free a few months ago but his stuff is some of the best and easiest to comprehend. Buy it.

Full disclosure: I have relation ship with nor do I receive benefit from Dean Valez but I sure like his stuff.

    Shatter.
It’s in the manual and in the effects pdf.
It’s easy unless you think you want to try to control it.

Use auxiliary timecode. It’s in the manual and it’s easy, it’s just not very clear.

Or just put them on separate tracks and edit the old fashioned way.

October 14, 2007 at 3:42 pm in reply to: Chroma keying

[Editguy69] ” have to do my first chroma keying gig in FCP 6 and was wondering what other people are using. “

FCP, Motion, After Effects. Some of us use Shake, combustion, or a live swithcer.

[Editguy69] “Does FCP have built in plugins that do a good job or do I need to use other plugins or AE? “

Yes. No, but you might. The two crucial and literally hardwired chromakey fandamentals are proper lighting on the set and sufficient chroma resolution. It is impossible to pull a decent key without BOTH. There is nothing in any software that can save you if you fail on either of those.

[Editguy69] “Can you do this in motion? “

    Yes.

[Editguy69] “Footage is from betacam SP captured uncompressed 10 bit.
    Thanks “

Then your issue will be how you digitize the footage into the computer in order to preserve the maximum chroma resolution. Look for posts on AJA and KONA cards.

October 12, 2007 at 5:12 pm in reply to: Small Caps????

Smaller Caps is a convenient tool but a typographical disaster. The kerning on fake typefaces is horrible. This is not usually a problem with video people but can be a total disaster for picky clients who understand print and type.
You will need to purchase the Small Cap version of their typeface if it’s important to them. Or you will spend many hours tweaking the kerning.
