The difference in size between varicam footage and DV is minimal

Varicam@24fps = 5.5 mb/sec
DV@24fps = 3.8 mb/sec

Not worth doing the offline/online thing when cutting Varicam.

720P HD is very easy to work with.

This is exactly my conclusion. The article I wrote was considering some situations when your media may have been knocked offline etc.

As Luke Maslin of BMD added in an addendum to the article, your workflow was the one that you should use when working with HDV.

Did the stills originalte ona mac or PC. I have only had real problems with images created in PC apps where sometimes they come up green in the fcp window but fine on the export.

I have had to recreate/resave these images as tiff’s with mac pack bits instead of IBM.

It’s a shot in the dark, but maybe that is it.

Why risk this?

Anyone who wants to put their camera tapes in a cheap camera, that was not really designed for intense playback is beyong me. You might spend a bit more on a DSR11 or a Panasonic 2600 deck, BUT you are buying a dedicated VTR that is robust enough to handle a lot of tape changes and it has a better threading mechanism, etc.

This camera you buy will be tossed out the window once you loose a great piece of tape because the camera ate it.

Have a tiny it of respect for the footage you shoot. 🙂

it sounds more like you want the film cut for free.
Is the film already edited so the students can have something to compare their work to. So that they might see what decisions “other” editors made onthe same materaial and decide whether it is valid.

Would a student, purchase the right to use thei training tool?
Would an institution?

Do a test with bars and tone,

20 sec of bars and tone into the timline then mute track 2

Select the track one clip (make sure it is highlighted in teh timeline) and then do the modify >AUDIO>PAN CENTER.

If this works then it has something to do with hhow the original clips were captured.

OR
It has somethingt to do with you monitoring.

Are you using a mixer?Maybe the mixer is panned to the left only.

Gary makes a very good point though as some broadcasters actually contractually specify terranex conversion for 720P sources. So a test tape, using your method of QT conversion, might need to be submitted to the broadcaster first.

Terranex uses a specific hardware and software based algorythm in real time. With the multitude of real and imagined HD formats out there Broadcasters are protecting the content they purchase with these types of obligations so some very specifically state it has to be Terranex.

Details Please!

1. What are you sequence settings? Is the motion quality set to BEST?
2. What is your sequence CODEC? If it is DV you can expect less than favorable results on the move)
3. What speed are you rolling at? faster speeds will look worse.

Why not do the roll in FCP’s Boris title tool? OR Render the movie in after effects and import it in to FCP

Select all of the tracks int he timeline.

Go to Modify>AUDIO>PAN CENTER

It is now a mono track playing back on the left and right side.
