What is a good amount of drum hours on DVX-100A?
I looking to purchase a used DVX-100A. The camera has 73 drum hours. Is this too many for the DVX-100A? Obviously the lower the better, but what is a decent amount of drum hours?

That’s not too bad- I’ve seen many cameras with several hundred.

the heads are supposed to last 1000 hours.

Is the “drum hours” the same as the “hour meter”? (Information found in the “Other Functions” portion of the camera menu)
I’ve already got 114 hours racked up on my DVX since November.Follow-up question: Can anyone recommend a sensible mini dv camera that I can use at a capture/output deck, so I don’t have to put stress on the DVX? I’m tempted to go to Radio Shack and get a low-budget Panasonic model. ($350-400)

BTW, I am in the midst of reading some good stuff in the archives regarding using a cheaper mini dv cam as a deck. But if anyone has any info or opinions they’d like to offer up, I’m listening.

Why risk this?
Anyone who wants to put their camera tapes in a cheap camera, that was not really designed for intense playback is beyong me. You might spend a bit more on a DSR11 or a Panasonic 2600 deck, BUT you are buying a dedicated VTR that is robust enough to handle a lot of tape changes and it has a better threading mechanism, etc.
This camera you buy will be tossed out the window once you loose a great piece of tape because the camera ate it.
Have a tiny it of respect for the footage you shoot. 🙂
