I am purely guessing here, but I think the biggest cost in the Varicam comes from the block that does the framerate conversion. That what I have read a lot about here. The 9K HVX200 now does the almost the exact frame rates as the Varicam big brother.

The SDX 900 uses the same chip size as the Varicam and ALSO shoots 1080 so where is the dynamic range arguement when it is capturing to a LARGER frame size than the Varicam.

I seriously doubt that Panasonic put cheaper chips into a new product. If you look at the HDX-900 specs you will see that it has a 14bit output (something Varicam just added)

Sorry. I think that the Varicam is great if you own one, But it looks like between these past two product releases the Varicam is not the wisest purchase at this time, Unless you actually believe it is about 50,000$ more superior picture quality to the HDX-900.

Is there a facility with a Christie Projector in your nieghbourhood.

More and more people here in toronto are doing critical correction to Christie projectors that have bee calibrated to emulate the print.

I know of two houses here that have allowed people to set up their macs an feed teh CHristie to do the final CC. This seems to be the way to get the closest results to what the film print will look like.

I recently went through this on a commercial I was working on. Just a thought.

Up to that point I was using a JVC CRT and it was not to far off the final files.

There is a great program from Apple called Quicktime Pro.

It does a lot of format conversion using the export command it does.

Video to video
and Audio format conversion too.

Another Apple Program called compressor does a fantastic job with Mpeg 2

Quit FCP.

Power down the deck.

Disconnect the firewire cable.

Reconnect the firewire cable.

Turn the power on the deck.

Launch FCP.

It should be there.

Capture HDV.

Edit HDV.

Do not recapture, you will not gain anything. In fact you will loose quality compared to recompressing which is cleaner.

Media Manage the finished project to 10-bit uncompressed and color correct and output that finished project.

Buy more firewire storage to handle the extra footage. You can easily capture all of the footage natively.

Try pre-selecting some of the footage. Surely you can get it down to more managable hours upon the first screening.

You should use media manager to media manage your final sequence to DVC50 and render it out from there.

You might want to try to add a Natress DV Chroma smoothing filter on that.
