I think that this is the point of background rendering and 64 bit. Rather than seeing red bars, the software is doing what it needs to under the hood to five the creative process.
This is why the software is leveraging so many different system resources, CPU GPU and software accelelration.
I would think that Apple has their own version of the “mercury engine”.
If you really think that FCP X won’t compete with Adobe then you have to rewind and figure out that it took Adobe 11 years to create a completive suite the FCStudio.
Now the bar gets raised again.
Just for the editing alone people should move over because Premier, FCP and AVID are non linear editors that base themselves on tape based OURCE RECORD idea.
That is gone in FCP X and I say ‘ THANK GOD!” someone is creating software with a new approach to EDITING.

The basic idea is:
any codec in
ONE pristine CODEC out.I think that this means mixing and matching all formats and having the timeline output a floating point output (or a custom codec if you want)

From what I saw at the demo (all of it). I have to say that what I am most impressed with is the magnetic timeline and the metadata integration.
They took the point of view that the timeline is an editors “canvas” that is where we spend out time. and they built in tools (like auditioning) that mean I do not have to spend time versioning. I can version in the timeline.
I love the waveforms and the audio functionality and I am guessing that if they built it from the ground up OMF and XML are really well integrated (especially with all of that keyword and metadata integration).
I really want to get my hands on it. I think it will be liberating. They took trimming and seem to have advanced it to a new level by letting us see more of the footage. This means that we will spend less time playing back in a trim window and jumping in and out of “modes” a big fat time waster.
I also think they have not unleashed all of the power yet, but based on what I saw there is not really any other NLE that has this kind of timeline power. NOT AVID and not PREMIERE and NOT FCP 7.
We are in for great new times.
To those people want to call it iMovie, talk to Logic owners. They NEW logic interface really streamlined workflow. A week or two in this new software and we will be rocking it.
IN terms of “Professional”. I’m the professional not the software application.

I agree. Anyone who has devoted any time to editing footage professionally will see that APPLE has included things that will also advance the art of the editing craft itself. From what I am seeing this is a very considered rethink of editing craft.
My main complaint with most NLE’s has always been that they were quick to ad bells and whistles but not so quick to make the process of breaking down footage and assembling shots simpler.
Advancing this art and making it creative and flexible is new.
AVID is a good editor, FCP was a miniversion of AVID which merged into a suite of apps, I see premiere as a copy of the Apple Suite with some extra horsepower, but the new FCP will make the craft of editing simpler.
I can not wait to get my hands on it. I am all for simpler, easier, smoother. I don’t want keyframes getting in the way of my creative choices. The trimming they demonstrated alone is enough for me to buy the new app.

How can you make a professional informed choice for your facility without properly evaluating the feature set?
I’m sure 12 years ago when FCP came in at 1000.00$ and AVID was still $100,000.00 you heard alot of the same things.
Then what happened. FCP CHANGED EDITING for good.
Now they have moved their focus towards metadata and the WEB. That is somehow stupid I guess. Think about a site like flicker and what it would be without METADATA.
FCP is going to be the editing app that allows searchable metadata WITHIN EDITED qt movies. Contemplate what that means.
Thinka bout what it means when you can search keyworks strings on TERRABYTES of data on your SAN.
Step back. Look at the large picture of an application that needs to do MUCH more than the four walls around your “facility”.
Shit on apple all you want and go AVID or premiere, but it would be a mistake.

So what?
I am a professional. The tools I use don’t have to have the word professional in them to make me a professional.
Apple is a business. They want to sell software. I love iMovie on my iPhone. It let’s me experiment and create and that is what it is about.
The software tool should not be a jigsaw puzzle. It should liberate the creative mind and spirit.
If you read that as prisoner than you have professional identity problems. All of apple new apps are easy to use with powerful stuff under the hood.

Let’s you you took the other view and were optimistic.
You might assume that Apple put FXSp in auto pilot fir a few years. It does the job and is used as a preferred tool industry wide.
Let’s say you decided the best thing to do was rewrite the app with newcode instead of piecing together old code.
Keys say you committed to making the best post production software you could offer with new hardware you have coming.Would It not be wise to take the time to do it right.
FCP Lead post production away from $ 100,000.00 AVID systems and changed post forever.
With that legacy wouldn’t you think that the app the decided to create would change things again.
Come on. Don’t be part of the destruction gang, be part of the construction crew. This app is going to change post in a very huge way. AGAIN!!!!

I think it’d time for an intelligent app. There is no need, if built from the ground up, to be creating bloated apps. I’m finding a lot if the new apps very streamlined
