What I find I am often doing is a select all and then opening up the audio video.

I agree that add dissolve is a quick and dirty fix up for what you are trying to do but I really appreciate just grabbing the handle in the timeline and pulling a crossfade.

If they took that dissolve idea from logic interface it would be efficient. Just grab the audio crossfade tool and go.

A fast way to put say a 4 frame dissolve on everything is indeed missing but the new tools are much more powerful and have a more finished feel.

I am like all if us. I want it all andvill want both now. I would for sure encourage many to provide feedback.

With no output to tape I am assuming FCPX has no provision for needing to have a TC that begins with any hour code.

This said. You can modify an expired file with a tool like Sebsky’s tools which allows you to edit the TC in a QT movie file.

You can see all of the clips used in the timeline in the window beside the timeline when placed in list view.

This effectively makes the whole timeline an instant bin. If you want to, you can select the clips in the bin and assign a keyword to those clips in the timeline.

To organize those in the event browser you could just create a keyword collection which is a sifted bin.

I have bypassed creating multiple sequences.

As I watch I use in, out add to main storyline E key.

When I am done I duplicate the sequence and cut it down. Then I duplicate and cut it down. If I want a clip back I go back one sequence and copy paste it.

You could also use keywords in place of sequences. Then group the clips I sequences based on range based keywords.

There are many more efficient ways. Just try some. You’ll see that building multiple sequences isn’t as nesseary in the program architecture.

I really like this. Especially when breaking down doc footage. You can cut a clip to bits for audio, make it a compound clip, name it, thematically or by the first few words or the essence.

Then as you move compound clips around you can structure them just by having a look at the content.

I used to do this with multiple nested sequences, it’s so much easier now. When you are assembling you can literally look at the words in the timeline and decide, “ok, say this, then this then that, no wait, switch that, etc.” so fast for creating a story.

Are you asking about four track output or panning tracks.

Panning tracks is easy. Just select all the clips you want to pan left and in the info dialog box change the pan to left. Do the same for the right side.

In terms of M&E why not do it with multiple timelines. Not too complicated.

You can’t drop anything to tape or to a DA88 with FCPX but there are ways to archive by creating multiple sequences or media managing the sequence to other location and maybe burning to DVD.

Think of keywords as a database for the public library. Think of what you want to search.

I suggest you use the full names. If you use a WC for example then context sensitive searching might turn up every clip with a W and a C.

You can add many keywords to a clip as well.

For example a clip could contain these keywords.

Interview
Churchill
1944
Audio only
BBC
Five stars

Then When you look for your best clips from that person in that year you will find what you are looking for.

Don’t be obscure. Imagine what you will want to look for and use those as keywords.

Also create a keyword legend for anyone else needing to search the project in the future.
