With DVC PRO100 as an offline HD resolution (14mb/second, which is a smaller file size than Uncompressed 10bit SD) I would have to say that Q-rez is most likely not a big priority now.

Apple also seems to be moving away from supporting cards with “additional” processing for FCP, preferring to keep everyting on the drive speed, cpu and hardware, so the cards seem to be becoming the pipeline.

I know that Aurora is having similar problems so it might be an FCP thing, or a QT 7 thing, or a tiger thing.

    Let’s do the math:
    A
    Capture PAL
    10 to 20 hours
    B
Transcode and render clip by clip PAL to NTSC
    40 to 60 hours

    C
    Have the tapes professionally transfered
    10 to 20 hours
    D
    Capture NTSC tapes
    10 to 20 hours

The Natress filters are fantastic, but I would use them on finished shows, not for a job tis large.

Now all you have to figure out is if a+b is actually is cheaper than c+d

I think it just generates the Icon because it came from FCP.

You can change which program opens it by right clicking and selecting OPEN WITH>quicktime player.

There is no quality diferenc in the movie if it comes from FCP.

I have a huge drive and I am running Tiger with no issues. The drive was formatted in Panther so I am not sure if it is a Tiger formating issue or what? What about re-seating the card and just double checking the connection and cable, etc. Sometime the card can loosen after a few hook ups.

Thanks for posting this. It is so nice to know that FCP is installed in the kind of environment you are talking aout and it is working so well for you guys. These kinds of large broadcast operations help all of us. We can point to the great success that Final Cut is having in set-ups such as yours which are very large scale and efficient and cost effective.

  • Sean,

I am well aware of the offerings out there. I was specifically talking about current cards for FCP. To keep the price point low card manufacturers (based on Apple’s policy too) have stayed away from putting additional processing on the cards. Remember the ICE cards for after effects. Typically this type of “extra” processing becomes dated. I would love to see a true DUAL channel card for FCP, with simple things like 3-way CC, dissolves and titles being passed over to the cards processors (which AVID does) but it seem that there is no demand for this type of product.

The way it stands now in FCP, is the fastest mac and the fastest drives give you the most RT. Period.

June 7, 2005 at 10:58 pm in reply to: FCP STILL FRAME PROBLEMS (SOLUTION?)

The Problem also seems to be rooted in PC formated or originated files. If they originally came from a PC it seems that FCP 5.0 has some problems dealing with them.

I also think that this is a problem with Dynamic RT in that if the files are “green line” files the proxy is just awful. IN 4.5, the “green line” files in the timeline never really looked this bad before any moves were dropped on them.
