    Scot,

You have opened the door to a bunch of Big knob jokes here.

I’m with you Walter. I know it can be done without a mixer via the OS but I prefer the mixer. There always seems to be more things to listen to in an edit room than just the mac.

    Sure,

But putting a mixer in between is probably a good idea. Unless you want to be turning your monitors up and down all the time.

So curiousity is getting the best of me. I did this small test. Try it yourself if you like.

    Made two ten second sequences.

    Sequence A Sheer Codec
Sequence B Apple 10 bit uncompressed

Sequence A Exported movie is about 100mb
Sequence B Exported movie is about 300mb

BUT ON MATCHED FRAMES ON THE SEQUENCES THE WAVEFORM TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY

Sequence A has a slight color shift, is about 1 IRE unit lower and is visibly less saturated compared to to 10 bit uncompessed.

But it is a full third the frame size, is sharper than DVC PRO and renders very quickly.

I invite you to try your own little test.

    Andreas,

Thanks for all of the useful info.

I wonder if AJA support can kick in to this forum.
One question I have is about HD, what kind of frame size and DATA rates would we be talking about ith the Sheer Codec as a replacement for 10bit uncompressed.

Do you have File size comparisions for this.
If this is all true this could be the ulitmate solution loosing M-Jpeg.

    Bob,

Youare right. I have the K-box, but I also have a D2A converter as well.

I know, it’s overkill. 🙂 I am loving this company too. Do you have any experience with their power amps?

  • Unlike the PD 150 which offered a “memory stick to record progressive still images to, the DVX100 does not do this.

You can capture a hlaf second. digitize and export it though.

  • You can do that with this software package, while your camera is attachd to the computer.

    https://www.istopmotion.com/

The DVX does not record one frame at a time.

    Well,

First off it would have to be RT enabled by apple within FCP and it is not. The RT enabled codecs are DV, DVCPRO50, 100, Uncompressed and maybe a couple f the offline rt codecs as well.

People have been pushing fro Apple to RT enable M-jpeg, because it is such a good codec, but Apple has not done tis. Even at half teh size of teh Annimation codec the data rates are still very high and it is a 4:4:4 codec.

I thimnk I might ask Bitjazz support to read this thread and offer up an explaination.

    Hans,

This codec is designed specifically for archiving material. I would not class it as a “capture” codec. It is a proprietary codec that uses lossless compression to get file sizes down. If you work with a lot of annimation files, for example, you can save a lot of space archiving or rendering this codec out of AE. You can import this codec into fcp and render it into any timeline you like and it works beautifully and it is very, very clean and pixel perfect.

It’s a great way to save space for livetype as well. Anywhere you would use the annimation codec, you can use this codec as a half space replacement.

There is a free demo of it on the site which expires after 28days, and it costs $145 to buy. The player is free, so clients etc, can get the player for QT and view anything you create on their machines.
