No arguement from me on D0F. there is no way that you’ll get similar DoF with the HVX, but with carefull planning and lighting I think it will be possible to get very acceptable results with the HVX. It seems that if they went to this extent to match the 900 that it must be a pretty important component to their workflow. And it was so important that it was nessesary to degrade the quality of the image from the better camera’s so that they would have the freedom to use the tools they wanted to use.

That is smart film making. They took all of the tools they wanted to use and made them work together to make the film. It’s great that they had so many options and so many choices to make. Going back to my orginal point. It will be interesting to see if people go with a Varicam and an HVX or maybe just two HVX’s or Two Varicams. All of this depends, to a certain degree on budget of course, but I might go for the camera that records 1080 and then work take a lot of care with making that 1080 image look as good as it can with the tools and budget I have to work with.

They modufy the camera so that you can get the signal in a RAW format before it gets processed to tape. In this set up you would have to use a laptop or MAc mini to record the picture, but that is how panasonic suggests you record from the HVX when there are several hours of materail to record.

Could you see the F900 stuff vs the viper stuff in the final film? It seems like they still managed a very decent look to the whole film and a seemless one at that. I guess I was trying to say that if you mix the HVX and the Varicam for a film the big difference will be if you use the Ziess Primes and that will be the way to make the Varicam look far superior to the HVX.

The problem is this.

FCP does not mix codecs in the timeline. So first off you need to edit all of the footage in the same codec. THe reason everything stutters is becasue the codecs are different, you are asking FCP to do something it simple does not do.

Next. To pick a codec you should base it on a couple of things like:

1. Is there more DV or HDV?
2. How do you plan on finishing?
3. Is it an offline online workflow?
4. How effects intensive is it?

This is important becasue the HDV codec is awful when it comes to multigenerational performance, adding titles, color correction, and FX will degrade the picture.

If you are finsihs HD you might want to cut everythign DV and then reconform at a better than HDV codec.

THe beauty of FCP is that it is customizable for every person. THis can be a drawback if you are notthe kind of user who like to do much fiddling (many AVID editors like the proprietary codecs, which aren’t as clean as some that you get in FCP) because there is not much fussing about.

You need to do the following

1. Choose the workflow you want.
2. Plan the project from start to finish becasue there are many ways to go, FCP does them all, but you have to do the defining.

This is what the DVX 100 chips are capable of when the codec is bypassed

The chips are capable of far larger frame sizes than the codec allows for.

Still a more detailed explaination needed here.
Sequence settings?
Deck?
VTR control?
Have you marked ins an outs in the sequence?
Have you switched to editing mode from mastering mode in edit to tape?
Are you sure you are not assemble editing?
Is it just one shot that needs replacing?
Have you closed the project and restarted?
Did you trash FCP prefs files?
Are you running the latest driver/QT combo as recomended by AJA?

Also be sure that you are inserting and that you have the “add black to end of edit” box unchecked in the edit to tape window.
