Do you want to monitor HD or SD?

That will make a difference in your choices.

    Lars,

I hope the people at the Cow here might want to put the article on the site.

I am doing it as a workflow test for an upcoming project I am working on, thought I would share it in the interest of helping out other indy film makers.

I will not be comparing the Varicam and the HVX but it will be a step by step from the Varicam to 35mm via the ARRI Laserwriter.

I like knowing that Supersizeme was shot on mini DV and had a wide theatrical release. It is great to plan for the best picture but the story will aloways determine the finish. They weren’t about to shelve a film like supersizeme becasue it was shot in an inferior format. I think that small indy films are always going to cut through when they are about story and about good acting or revealing new great talents. It is great to know that the films will be of a much more pleasing quality but I did not mind the quality of supersizeme, rogerandme, bowling for columbine, murderball (dvx100a) and other recent theatrical successes.

Look for an upcoming article from me with extensive tests going from Varicam to 35mm. Complely objective real world test. Almost completed, I am just having trouble getting a 1200A for the 1080 recapture.

    Create a new sequence
Apple key “0” (zero) to open the settings
load the PAL DV sequence settings

Drop the HDV sequence onto the DV sequence

    Render the sequence

Send this SD sequence to compressor and then to DVDSP, etc.

FCP only support 24-bit audio depth. If you create the H264 with a 48K 24bit uncompressed audio there will no need to render it in FCP.

You’re mix should correspond to your tones. Tone in FCP play back at -12DB in the timeline. I do not PEAK anything past -9. When recording you can afford to leave yourself some headroom as there is no margin for error in digital recordings.

When mixing for final output I try to keep peak levels Below -9. This then matches the tone well. So that anyone who lines up your tape with the tone can expect to get roughly the same levels fromthe rest of the program.

    A few pointers.

    1. Pan all Dialog tracks to the center
    2. Leave FX and music in stereo pairs.

This helps the dialog puch through the music.
You might also want to put a compressor on the Dialog so that it keeps a nice smooth level throughout your mix. This also helps the dialog cut the mix better and keeps levels more even.

    Jiri,

The HDV codec is going to cause gigantic headaches inpost. It might have been worth the wait for the post savinf time of the HVX.

I thnk that the HVX is the most functional of the camera’s just because of things like the fact that they have placed everything in the right place for functionality. It is really easy to use. THat is the fisher price part I like.

Yes they could use the Apple product design team for the next release for sure

A green bar means that they are not rendered. you can force render them by making sure that green bar renders are set in FCP Sequence>RENDER menu.

Then activating that render by selecting the title and pressing Apple key+R or option key=+R

After the render they should look great.

Select the Kona 2 as the sound input and output device in the system preference pane and it will do all of the computer sounds too.

As far as V-Out you can select the KONA 2 as the V-OUT of compatible apps like motion and AE and some sound programs too.
