  • Converting HDV to DV in FCP5?

Posted by Nigel on January 1, 2006 at 3:53 pm

I’m in England, UK. I’ve shot a short programme of 5 minutes on a Sony HVR-Z1 in HDV 1080i mode. I imported the footage and have edited it in FCP5 in 1080i HDV mode. I now want to down convert it so I can burn it to a DVD and watch it on a regular PAL TV (CRT).

First, I thought I could use Compressor and burn to DVD in native HDV 1080i mode, but when I do this, my DVD won’t work in my regular DVD player, on my regular TV, but it does play back using Apple’s DVD software player on my Mac.

I assume I have to do the downcoversion until I can get a DVD player that will play back native HDV DVDs, and a native HDV TV?

If this is the case, How can I change my sequence on the timeline in FCP from it’s current native HDV 1080i mode so it is regular widescreen DV footage that I can then compress and burn to DVD and watch in the usual way?

    Create a new sequence
Apple key “0” (zero) to open the settings
load the PAL DV sequence settings

Drop the HDV sequence onto the DV sequence

    Render the sequence

Send this SD sequence to compressor and then to DVDSP, etc.

    Hi David,

Could he use compressor to go directly from HDV to SD MPEG2?

If so would the quality be better?

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch
