  • sequence settings, clips settings. and bears oh my!….

    hi

I am a newb to FCP 5, although been editing variously for 20+ years, and i seem to be stymied by workflow issue:

I have a project that consists of a mix of DV anf HDV clips captured via firewire. my sequence settings are frame size=NTSC DV 3:2 upper Filed doninance, Pixel Aspect=NTSC CCIR601 / DV 720 x480
    and DV/DVCPRO compressor.

When i play back my sequence the output of my LH card (componenet Beta NTSC 59.97) stuuters
and freezes about 4 seconmds into the hdv clips? thge dv clips are fine

    1. WHY?

    2. Does changing the current settings do anything? or do i have to make a whole new sequence or what?

    3. in order for the hdv clips to play, do i need to use media manager to recompress to a different flavor? if so what? a kona codec? or an aplle codec?

I have a promax raid clockin out at 210 MB/second, i would think that the sequence settings would handle the mixed media (lowest common denominator type thing)

unfortunately, we have an attitude around here of ready fire aim, so the most desirable workflow probably did not get implemented, and here i am!

thanx in advance, and i hope i have made my situation clear

    The problem is this.

FCP does not mix codecs in the timeline. So first off you need to edit all of the footage in the same codec. THe reason everything stutters is becasue the codecs are different, you are asking FCP to do something it simple does not do.

Next. To pick a codec you should base it on a couple of things like:

    1. Is there more DV or HDV?
    2. How do you plan on finishing?
    3. Is it an offline online workflow?
    4. How effects intensive is it?

This is important becasue the HDV codec is awful when it comes to multigenerational performance, adding titles, color correction, and FX will degrade the picture.

If you are finsihs HD you might want to cut everythign DV and then reconform at a better than HDV codec.

THe beauty of FCP is that it is customizable for every person. THis can be a drawback if you are notthe kind of user who like to do much fiddling (many AVID editors like the proprietary codecs, which aren’t as clean as some that you get in FCP) because there is not much fussing about.

You need to do the following

    1. Choose the workflow you want.
    2. Plan the project from start to finish becasue there are many ways to go, FCP does them all, but you have to do the defining.

    thanx!

its actually about 50/50, but we are looking to finish SD 4×3

since the only other flavor is dv, is that waht i want my sequence at? (ands is there a difference between apples dv and kona dv?)

    then:

can and should i recompress all my HDV clips to DV using the media manager?

OR if everyone changes their mind and goes for 16×9, whats the most efficient codec to convert the dv and hdv, Apple intermediate? dvcpro hd?

i heer you about planning your project in advance, and i will in the future, i just got stuck on this one so i am hoping to rescue waht i have without having to recapture

as far as offline online, all the footage is at full rez except stock and stills. so what does that say? we have a terabyte of storage, so it made sense to dump it all in at dv/hdv via firewire

again thanx a bunch for your replies, i be happy to repay favor somehow!

    Hi again

just to close things up, i ran media manager to recompress all my HDV footaqge to DV and then reconnected it. the stuff plays fine in my DV sequence.

I did have to re cut in all the ex hdv shots, as they had scaling and some fliters going on.

I suppose there is a way to kill all the filters and such across a range of clips, but ill get to that

thanx again, and i’ll probably be back!
