Picture in Picture or Split Screen Question

i’m a FCP newbie having just crossed over from premiere. i like to use an effect where the screen is split into quarters & a video sequence plays in each quarter, superimposed over a black matte. i used to do this in premiere using ‘virtual tracks’ layered on top of each other in the timeline, & using motion to arrange & fix each ‘quarter’ over black video with borders. i hope this makes sense.

i have no idea how to do this in FCP HD 4.5. i’ve searched the archives using ‘picture in picture’ & ‘split screen’ for search threads but had no luck. can anyone help? remember, i’m a newbie (ie. clueless!) so i need step by step instruction. please be gentle!

You really need to look through the manual. If you search the Help file for motion effects you’ll find what you need. Basically you stack the clips on multiple layers and use scale and position to place them where you want.

Hey Tom
Any idea pretty pls how to do what I’d call a ‘picture shove’ in FCP? i.e, the incoming pictures shove off the outgoing picture. They push them off the screen and replace them, not wiping over them but pushing them off (usually with a thin black border or not to taste).

Looked in manuals, tried all the FX one at a time that I thought might be it. Can’t suss it at all.
