what sort of files are you making?
quite a few avid qt codecs don’t carry alpha
I find png sequences set to millions of colours+ on export from after effects work best

    OK, the plot thickens
It is not the media, it’s a matte. The missing clip is built from a png sequence with alpha and sits in the bin as a matte key effect.
so the transparency and everything is gone but the alphaless animation is still there.
Is it possible that the matte and the media are on different drives as I have refreshed the database files for the drive the media lives on but no others.
Has anyone experienced this, loosing just part of a piece of media?
do you reccomend rebuilding all my databases?
is there anything destructive about deleting database files? I really dont want to get myself in any deeper water than I’m already in.

    ok, thanks everyone
I can confirm that I was very sure to only select the drives and projects I needed when searching using the tool
I have opened a project today to find media offline that is not offline, that is to say that when I right click, reveal source file avid points me at mxf data, however when I load the clip into the source monitor or timeline it reads as offline,
    wtf!!!

Sometimes if a whole tape is fed in at once I split it into smaller (15min) chunks and re join them, this is really easy in fcp as I can see source timecode from the timeline so this process is very quick
I also like having it there as a reference to which tape my footage came from
and probably a bunch of other things, I know I look at it a lot and I miss that premiere doesn’t have it

Hi yes I have tried your tool subbits and it seems a great general purpose subtitler, I particularly liked the XML output for final cut and think we may be buying into subbits just for that alone!

I’m afraid I don’t have much info about it as I have never used avid fx but to clarify.
Avid fx software has the option under the file-import menu to import a subtitle file
I havent tried it but I now I know subbits can make these maybe I will try it out

My problem is that I like to subtitle on an offline PC leaving edit suites to get on with the job at hand
but as always there will be one or two amendements that have to be made when a stack of subtitles come in, I would love to be able to open a subtitle quickly in either title tool or marquee or even avid fx, edit it and re insert it, rather than go back to my offline subtitling pc

It really kills me that we have to come up with these workarounds and whatnot on a system like Avid, whilst I appreciate your subbits software as a clever answer to a problem, this problem shouldnt exist.

remove the green background in ae and export an image sequence, png or tga are what I use
when you import into fcp you may have to modify alpha, cant remember where the control for this is off the top of my head but I know I’ve done it and it works fine
