For the good of my sanity I am looking for difinitive technique in subtitling in avid composer.

At the moment I am creating titles offline using a package called lemony which will export a range of edls and rendered images that work seemlesly with my fcp setup.
The process for getting these titles into Avid is sooo convoluted that I can barely bring myself to outline it but it involves creating a dummy sequence and a seperate edl sequence……. and so on

Anyway, I digress, I have noticed on the file>import menu of avid fx there is an option to import subtitle file, the import dialog then allows me to import ebu stl files (which Lemony cant create) or an avid locator file (.txt file)

Now I am assuming that both of these files will be edl format files that will allow avid fx to build a subtitle sequence with editable text, controlable alpha etc.

    Now for the questions!

Is my assumption about avid fx correct?
What is an Avid locator file (.txt)?
    Is there a simpler way?

    thanks for listening!!!

One of the contibutors on this list and over at the Avid-L2 is Bouke Vahl.

Visit his website for this tool (and many others):

As Joe stated, i have also written a subtitle prep tool.
But my routine is the same as lemony, i’m afraid.
If you know how to run a macro, it aint that hard.
It takes me 5 minutes to set it up and insert all titles in a sequence.

As for EBU STL, my application supports that.
But i’m very curious about the Avx file->import routine you describe. What version are you running, and what effect do you see?

Hi yes I have tried your tool subbits and it seems a great general purpose subtitler, I particularly liked the XML output for final cut and think we may be buying into subbits just for that alone!

I’m afraid I don’t have much info about it as I have never used avid fx but to clarify.
Avid fx software has the option under the file-import menu to import a subtitle file
I havent tried it but I now I know subbits can make these maybe I will try it out

My problem is that I like to subtitle on an offline PC leaving edit suites to get on with the job at hand
but as always there will be one or two amendements that have to be made when a stack of subtitles come in, I would love to be able to open a subtitle quickly in either title tool or marquee or even avid fx, edit it and re insert it, rather than go back to my offline subtitling pc

It really kills me that we have to come up with these workarounds and whatnot on a system like Avid, whilst I appreciate your subbits software as a clever answer to a problem, this problem shouldnt exist.

Avid FX is made by Boris. It allows the import of EBU N19 files as creates an FX track with all subtitle in place.

    Michael,

What’s up with Avid Studio Toolkit?

I’m after Avid FX for exactly this function, and i am confused…
Avid sells it for 1439 USD, with the following text:

Powerful, complete multimedia studio for Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and NewsCutter systems*
Please note: For use with Xpress Pro v5.7 only

    What is that with compatibility???
    And,
VideoGuys sells Studio Toolkit for 300 USD (dunno what version, they don’t state it on their site)
B&H sells it for 895 USD

How come the huge price differences?

Since i need a dongle update, can someone tell me if Avid FX can indeed run on a MC / adrenaline?

    Thx,

    Bouke
