I work exclusively with AVCHD files (Sony NEX-VG10 prosumer camera) and my video quality is outstanding (well, when I get the lighting right!). My camera is 24mb/sec, so maybe yours is lower, hence the poor quality?

Xeons are designed mainly for server use, but high-end workstation use as well. In regards to render times, Xeon workstations will easily outperform any Intel i7 processor.
If the budget permits, and you do this for a living, Xeon CPUs and compatible motherboards are the way to go.

Having two GPUs isn’t going to give you 2x faster render speeds. I believe that Crossfire is strictly for gamers and no NLE system is going to take advantage of dual-GPUs when it comes to rendering.

Windows Media Player should be able to play an MPG2 file with no issues. Maybe you have an old version of Media Player?
Do you have a render option for WMV file output? That should play fine on any computer.

Maybe your friend was expecting better quality (ie- original footage recorded at a higher bitrate), and since your footage didn’t live up to his expectations he incorrectly assumed that it was SD instead of HD.

It’s not the name on the laptop that counts- it’s what’s inside. Since AlienWare has different hardware configurations available, you’ll have to tell us what specs you’re looking at. Their laptops are usually quite powerful and do not use integrated graphics, so i’ll go out on a limb and say that most (if not all) of their laptops should run Vegas Pro fine (if that’s what you’re wanting to know).

Discovering it is the easy part. Coming up with the money to acquire it is a whole different story!
To be honest, I just read a few tech-oriented sites (since i’m into system hardware) and share info that might benefit those in the video editing community.

What was your reasoning for cranking up the dynamic RAM preview? Since you were expecting Vegas Pro to run faster, may I ask what part of the software were you expecting to see this increase? Faster renders? Smoother video preview playback? We also do not know what your previous hardware configuration was, so don’t know what you’re comparing it to.
Just so you know, my previous system that ran Vegas (Pro 8) was a laptop with Intel i3 CPU, integrated GPU and 8gb RAM. When I built my latest system, and installed Pro 12, they only performance improvement was a decrease in render times (strictly for YouTube) and smoother video preview playback. Other than that, there was no real difference between the two systems.

Please post a screenshot of your project properties as well as a screenshot of your video render settings. I’m guessing that one of those is not set correctly.
