  • Burning to bluray – but getting SD results?

    Posted by Jess Hinchliffe on July 30, 2013 at 7:14 pm

    Hi there,

    I’m having issues burning blu-ray discs.

    I’ve filmed some footage using a HDV camera and captured it from tape, the footage properties state 1440 x 1080. Full HD(V)

    I’ve then edited this footage using Sony Vegas Pro 10.0 in a project with the following properties;

    and burned to bluray using these settings;

    The burn completed successfully and plays back fine however when I took it to a projectionist friend of mine to see how it looked on a cinema screen, he told me that it was standard definition footage, burned on to a blu ray disc.

    I don’t understand where I’ve gone wrong, any help would be massively appreciated here as I feel out of options :S
    And does it make a difference if I render it as 1920×1080 HDV or 1920×1080 HD?

    No, its not standard definition footage burned on Blu-ray.
    You have burned your disc fairly correct. Dont know how your friend
    was viewing your content.

    Maybe your friend was expecting better quality (ie- original footage recorded at a higher bitrate), and since your footage didn’t live up to his expectations he incorrectly assumed that it was SD instead of HD.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

    My friend said that the projection equipment read the footage as standard definition, and as a result misaligned the image on the cinema screen. So it wasn’t jut his personal opinion, it was the equipment – if this makes sense.

    I really hope you’re right and that the bluray is fine, but is there anything at all that you can suggest has gone wrong?

    Incidentally, Steve, you said that the settings were “fairly right” what would you change?

    I’ve just run the blu ray disc through mediainfo software and the results are as follows

    I’m not crazy am I? This is telling me that the footage is HD quality?!

    Of course it is HD Quality. Although i had said fairly correct,
    there isnt anything necessarily i would change except maybe the
    other Sony AVC format.
    But otherwise your friend or his equipment is doing something wrong.

    Hi,
    I would do things slightly differently if I were burning it. However I still can’t see why it doesn’t work with what you’re doing. Did you get an independent check? i.e. play on another player.

    I would create the project using the button to “Match Media Video Settings” (I don’t think you have). Then “Render As” pick a Blu-Ray template, say one matching the project settings and it will pick an avc output. Then tools burn Blu-ray.

    see if that helps.

    “My friend said that the projection equipment read the footage as standard definition”

    Perhaps the projector defaults to SD if it doesn’t see a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) on the disc.
