What type of drive do these files reside on? If it is a typical hard drive (non SSD) maybe you have a bad sector (which is why it happens to you occasionally). If it is a basic hard drive, go into the ‘Tools’ menu and do a disk scan. I’d also run a defrag on it, but back up the data first!

I’m gonna take a stab at this:
The first hour plays fine, you say. Is this from the timeline? If so, turn off your system for a while so it cools down. Maybe 30 minutes. When you boot back up, start playback from the middle of the timeline. Watch a few minutes. If it plays fine, then you have a hardware issue, possibly overheating of the CPU or power supply is failing.Dave

I don’t know how to check system resources in Windows 8 (msconfig in Win7). My first logical guess is that on system startup you have a bunch of applications that are starting up, like antivirus software, for example.
There should be no program, except your antivirus, that should start running at system startup. These will use system resources and can lead to memory errors, since you only have 8gb.

It is probably safe to say that the newer versions of Vegas (12 & 13) work very well with most modern formats. Are you more concerned with professional or consumer-type of formats?
My camera shoots AVCHD (24mb/s) and Vegas Pro 12 runs perfectly with my footage. I have never had a system hang, hiccup, error or crash when doing anything in the software. I built my system using the fastest Intel i5 processor at the time (didn’t use an i7) due to budget.

Check your CPU temps. Might be overheating during renders, but John is usually right re: FRAPS footage.

For my YouTube renders I use the Main Concept HD for Internet 1080 and I crank up both the average and maximum bit rates, as well as enable two-pass. My AVCHD footage ends up looking awesome with the above. I don’t care about render times.
I advise you to use the search tool and you’ll see this has been covered many times, and you’ll see most others use the same render settings.
