The meters on the Beta are showing an RMS (average) reading on a different scale (VU) than the instantaneous peak meters of PPro. So your dB math is not entirely accurate. You kind of mixed kilos and pounds. (That’s supposed to be humorous and not derogatory.) But… using the digital meters, and max peaks at -9dBfs, you have 11dB of headroom over reference level.

It should be seen by Encore as a tape drive, which is all it really cares about. The bigger issue is if the replicator has a tape drive that will read the tapes. Call your friendly replicator to find out for sure.

There is one replicator I use often that has multiple tape drives in just about any format you can imagine. To quote their tech rep, “You have to be ready for anything.” I know for certain that they have drives that can use tapes created by the VS160.

I think they are trying to say that Encore IS a professional mastering tool. At least that’s the way I read it. You don’t need any other software to create DLTs for replication.

I’d like to suggest that try exporting a little something in Windows Media too just to compare quality. Do your test so that each export, QT and WM, is the same screen size and overall bitrate. I’d be interested to hear what you think.

According to SMPTE recommended practice, reference tone should be at -20dBfs (on a digital peak meter like PPro’s) with maximum program peak at -9dBfs. This standard is used by most(if not all) broadcast operations centers in the U.S. Using this practice, if you set the SP machine record level to 0VU while PPro plays back the -20dBfs tone then you will get excellent (indeed perfect) levels on the SP machine.

Using the QuickTime Pro player open the file properties window (ctrl+j). Select the video track in the left dropdown and Quality from the right dropdown. Check the “High Quality Enabled” option and marvel at the improvment. Keeping this setting on for this file requires you save it.

If you are using QT to encode to some other format this option does not really need to be on – full quality will be used no matter how this option is set. This option is a player “feature” that is probably left over from the days of less powerful computers that had a hard time playing high quality without dropping frames.

What are you going to be transcoding the file to?

There is probably more than one method and perhaps someone will chime in with a better one.Here’s how I would do it.

Part the Timeline cursor (TLC) at one end of the section to remove
Select the razor tool (C)
Make sure snap is active
Hold the shift key while using the razor to cut through all tracks.
Move TLC to other end of section to remove
Cut through all the tracks again
Change to the selction tool (V)
Drag the mouse across all tracks of the section to be removed (this selects all the “bad” stuff)
Hold shift and press Delete to extract the selected materal and accomplish a ripple of all tracks at the same time.

Takes longer to describe than to do. Hope this helps.
