December 12, 2006 at 5:17 pm in reply to: Graffiti 5 on a Mac Pro?

I have a years worth of projects with Graffiti 4 clips.

We just moved over to the Intel Macs. Now ALL my projects crash or will not load.
So I am very interested in this patch for V5 and I’m pretty much sunk until it arrives.

After talking to TS this morning, they agree that a board exchange is in order. The other problem I was experiencing was system restart with only one LED on the Kona coming on. There should be 2 LEDs on after boot up.

So, I am greatful for the terrific support we recieve from Aja.

Yes, I did a complete uninstall. It may be that 2.0.1 upgrades the board firmware and going back to an earlier version is not possible?

Some installers have an optional key sequence that will allow a back slush of the firmware. I’m going to call TS today to see what’s up with my system as the audio output is bad. I may try some of the earlier installers. As it is now, only 2.0.1 will reinstall. (after an uninstall).

  • Thanks for that info on the BR-HD50. I have been unable to find info on an update from JVC. I was hesitant to send in our decks without confirmation of a firmware flash.

Any advice on who I should contact?

    Thanks

April 29, 2006 at 2:45 pm in reply to: HDV TO KONA

I’ve been digitizing hours and hours of JVC HDV footage to my FCP5 system. Less space needed than DV at it’s 19Mb datarate. No need to load in at any other rez. The footage looks great in it’s native format. Of course 24p isn’t supported in FCP with 720p HDV. We shoot 30p. I have video playback set to Aja 720p 59.94 8bit. It looks great on the monitor in HD or downconverted to SD. I conclude if I need a DVCPro HD master, I can playback via SDI to a DVCPro HD deck.

The ONLY problem I’ve run into is that “Print to Tape” wants to conform the entire edit to HDV output, even though I have Aja Kona selected as the video output in the prefs. IOW, it wants to render the whole timeline to HDV, like I’m printing back to the HDV deck.

February 14, 2006 at 3:11 pm in reply to: Kona LS and FCP black level

I just installed Kona LH software version 1.2

First test show that this problem may have been fixed with the intro of the included pro-amp and unity gain reset.

The first clips I’ve been capturing appear to have the same setup as when digitized.

Time will tell, but it’s a good omen.

February 13, 2006 at 9:03 pm in reply to: Kona LS and FCP black level

I’m revisting this topic because there is an issue here specifically with the PhotoJPEG codec.

The problem is this: If I set the Kona to 7.5 Setup in the control panel and digitize into FCPro 5, while monitoring the digitizing and output preview, everything is fine.

The scopes in FCPro show that the set up is being removed and blacks are now at 0 IRE.

But when I play back the clip and look at it on the analog outputs, it’s not the same as what I digitized. The blacks are crushed. Yes, they are 7.5 IRE, but now the same clip that was fine going in, looks muddy and dark.

I wish someone else could confirm this effect I’m seeing with some external scopes. Using the uncompressed codec does not have this same problem.

Also, when stopping on a frame in FCP the black level changes in the Viewer when going from still to playing the clip.

January 26, 2006 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Log and Capture delay Kona LH with component input

    Thanks for the help

We are using a Ocean Matrix component AB switcher. The only problem with this config is that the JVC BRHD50 cannot be refed to black burst as far as I can tell. Nothing in the manual nor any ref input on it. I bet this whole problem is realted to that.

One thing we’ve noticed, it seems to only do this when the deck is downconverting HDV. IOW, when 720p is being downconverted and output as NTSC. We can capture 720p 59.94 to the Aja 720 codec without this issue. But it sometimes takes a restart to get the whole thing to switch to HD capture.

I downloaded the standalone Aja capture utility and it works fine with all of the above standards, no delay, spinning wheel. So we can use that to capture.

Setting in and outs for a JVC downconverted NTSC capture clip and using RS422 control results in a spinning wheel of death, yet the Beta deck in the same config works fine. BTW, This is on TWO identical FCPro systems and TWO BRHD50 decks.

    Any more suggestions?

January 26, 2006 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Kona LS and FCP black level

    This is a little confusing.

I have not checked this, but I am using BetaSP…7.5 IRE black levels.
If I digitize it and edit it in FCPro, then output via KONA with the control panel set to 7.5, will it actually output 15 IRE blacks?

    I hope not.

But it’s worth looking into for sure.

January 25, 2006 at 1:20 pm in reply to: Kona LS and FCP black level

I am having a similar problem with Kona LH 1.1.6

I called TS and explained the problem but I was told there is no know problem with black levels and they should function as set in the control panel. It was confusing me as well. Sometimes I was seeing 7.5 blacks, other time no.

It would be simpler if black level is simply passed through as captured without the added control.

I did find that changing the setting from 0 to 7.5 in the control panel did not work unless FCP is not running. Also, it could be possible the set up is only applied to output and not input. To avoid adding setup twice?

I have an external scope, and it does seem to change the output to correct values when pass through is selected in the control panel and it’s toggled between 0 and 7.5. I am using analog component and Kbox.

Note that SDI and Firewire don’t normally have 7.5 setup.
