I would seriously consider using RAID storage and a Media Asset Management system before archiving to LTO, this will be critical in making use of your archive in the future
I’m working with a client who has 2500 hours of digitised tape material, this is certainly a key issue for them

XMcore Avid project sharing looks very interesting!
Having used it in production for some years, how does it compare to an Isis or Editshare setup?

Sounds good, email me dave(at)cinedigital.co.uk

HP and Intel blade servers are good – the whole shebang can be pretty noisy mind you!
If the blades are 8 core with a decent amount of RAM they could be a good deal – 1U render boxes are generally cheaper but more of a hassle to set up & admin
I see things have moved on a bit from the LCP days 🙂
I’ll give you a call

Just swapped out the Apple Fibre Channel card for an Atto FC42-ES and now everything works fine!
Clearly there is a problem using the Apple card for Da Vinci on this machine
It looks like the 8x/4x PCIe design of the card is the root of the problem
Hope this is helpful to someone

At least FCP7’s media management allowed it to share projects on a SAN, a fundamental requirement for most post production facilities.

According to Larry Jordan at the FCP Supermeet in London, there is no educational pricing for FCP X. No shared storage working either.
I’m pretty sure I heard right. Of course things may change, but I’m not holding my breath.

Yes, to completely alienate your two major customer bases in one go takes some beating. Way to go Apple! Not!
Steve said that FCP X would be kickass, I’m starting to think there is a hidden depth to that statement 🙂
Really, the only way this can be prevented from happening again is to use Open Source – as high end VFX houses do worldwide.
Sadly, the education system (at least in the UK) does not teach the skills needed, as the recent Skillset/NESTA report confirms

The best bet for OS editing software ATM looks to be Lightworks – as used by Martin Scorsese’s editor Thelma Schoonmaker

June 27, 2011 at 11:42 pm in reply to: Will FCPX debacle hasten open-source editing proliferation? Now Lightworks is Open Source it is free to run on any platform – all that is needed is a bit of programming 😉
Just had a look at the public beta site – it’s developed quite a bit since LW shark badges were de rigeur at IBC back in the 90’s

They say a Linux and OS X version is planned for late 2011. Very interesting…
Thelma Schoonmaker and some other very established feature editors like have never stopped using it.
Develop links to CeltX and it would be way ahead for all kinds of collaborative drama work.
In light of the FCP X debacle, OSS is really the only way the editing community Won’t Get Fooled Again!
