    Here’s the project
A few thousand tapes of different formats,
BetaSP, 1″, DigiBeta, D2, D3 that need to be long term archived
Program lengths vary from a few minutes to 90 minutes.
    All are finished shows.
I have all the various tape machines, so that’s not an issue.
The D2 and D3 have serializers and I have the appropriate
units (DSP’s) to convert the BetaSP and 1″ to 601 SDI
I want to be able to do this without first loading into
a NLE system and to make the workflow as close to old
    fashioned DigiBeta cloning as possible
    Two ideas are
    1. to dub everything to P2 and then go P2 to LTO
    2. to dub everything to SSD’s via BlackMagic and then
    go from SSD to LTO

    What say you all
Looking for workflow ideas and hardware recommendations?
I’m looking for a simple, easy to operate set up.
Hardware budget is around 10,000 not including P2 equipment
but including any Blackmagic gear (I have plenty of access
to P2) Budget can expand a bit if Blackmagic workflow is significantly better.
As a monkey wrench client might want all shows conveted to HD
in the process for which we would put a Teranex in the signal Chain

    Thanx all in advance

    I’d go with option 2 – for 2 reasons:

1: You will be able to work very efficiently with the media on the SSD drives
2: Archiving the data from the SSDs to the LTO drive will be much faster than from the P2 media.

I would seriously consider using RAID storage and a Media Asset Management system before archiving to LTO, this will be critical in making use of your archive in the future

I’m working with a client who has 2500 hours of digitised tape material, this is certainly a key issue for them

@Dave – I agree whole-heartedly about DAM / MAM for management. However, it shouldn’t be looked at as an either-or situation. There are many existing and up and coming DAM / MAM solutions that include LTO tape archival integrated within the management workflow.

As one example, using CatDV with DAX Broadcast Archive and BRU Server allows a team to do all of the metadata management that would be expected while providing archival and off lining services as a simple mouse click within the management workflow – no IT staff required 🙂 .
