The important bit of information missing from your post is: how are you exporting it? What is your destination format? Is this for print?

This message is usally a result of not having enough frames for a preview, if your playhead is at the end of the comp and you have it set to render from the playhead for example, or if your comp is less than 2 frames long (for some reason). However, I have also gotten this error somewhat randomly. Usually rebooting After Effects will fix this if Edit>Purge>All doesn’t.

I’m sure that if you asked in the After Effects Expressions forum you’d get a deluge of willing helpers =)

Seems strange that it would look alright in AE and not in the render. If it’s really not showing up in AE I think I’d have to recommend just moving the in point of the adjustment layer back a frame. You may already know this, but you can use [ to move a layer’s in-point to the current frame or alt-[ to trim the layer’s in-point to the current frame (that last one shortens the duration and doesn’t move the out point).

[Michael Wilfong] “Collapse Transformations…this will allow the 3Dness of that comp to remain 3D in another comp.”
It’s a layer switch between the Shy guy and layer quality, it looks sort of like a sun.

If anyone has more information on audio between NTSC and PAL I’d love to hear it. I was doing some sync work for a series of concerts that were being recorded in the US, sent to Britain for mastering and then sent back to the states to be synced to the video footage and we frequently faced strange sync issues. I don’t know whether this was a PAL/NTSC issue or user error at some stage.
The problem has disappeared since they stopped using DA-88s as the deliverable and started sending us .AIFFs on DVDs. Takes all the hassle out of capturing too!

You can use Effect>Distort>Ripple, or for a greater degree of control (and render time) you can use Effect>Simulation>Wave World. Look for tutorials on the latter if you’re confused, or post again for specific information. The basic idea is you would render it as a height map and then use this as the source for a displacement map.

You know that AE7 isn’t a Universal Binary correct? It has to run under Rosetta’s binary emulation just like other PPC applications on an Intel Mac.
Read the post at the top of the forum:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/2/891369?
And try downloading the CS3 beta at labs.adobe.com, CS3 is a Universal Binary and supports multiple cores for rendering/preview.

Adobe Photoshop doesn’t save an alpha channel to define transparency unless you have an alpha channel and you tell it you want to save that alpha channel. Just because it looks transparent in Photoshop doesn’t mean there’s an alpha (PSDs handle transparency independently of alpha).
Photoshop uses alpha channels for all sorts of things other than transparency, which gives it more power to do interesting things… but with great power comes great responsibility (errr… not really). You just have to be very specific about how to save out your alpha channel.
First things first, to create your alpha you will need a selection. If your PSD has transparency and you’ve already merged down the layers this is easily accomplished by cmd (or ctrl on PC) clicking the layer thumbnail in the Layers palette. Once you have this selection go to the Channels palette (there’s a tab for this at the top of the Layers palette) and create a new alpha channel by clicking on the button at the bottom of the palette that looks like a document (it should say ‘create new channel’ when you mouse over it). Now, with your selection still active, select this channel and fill your selection with white (Shift-F5 and set your fill color to white, or foreground if your foreground color is white).
Now when you save you’ll have to make sure you’re saving with a format that supports alpha channels, and that Photoshop is in fact saving the extra information. There’s a check box for ‘Alpha Channel’ in the save dialog.

[Michael Wilfong] “The position of the layers are shifting out of alignment in the translation from Mac to PC.”
Is this something that you notice in bringing it into AE7 on a PC or that you hear about from someone else who is looking at the files? If the latter, I think you should try to confirm that things are in fact changing between versions/platforms for yourself.
Also, is the shift consistent? How much does it shift?
