I would try using multiple instances of the text with slightly different text animators and blend modes applied. You should be able to accomplish most of this look without using any effects.

You might consider reinstalling Photoshop, or looking into the help files. I don’t have a copy of the software with me right now, but I’m pretty sure that support for a given format is determined by plug-ins that reside in some deep dark place in the Photoshop folder.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to create a light, give it the same position coords as one of the null objects that the 3D tracker created, and then use the light as the emitter for Particular.

That should put the particles in the scene, then you can tweak them to get it right. Remember to take the velocity and emitter size into account as well.

The only way I would know how to accomplish that effect to the same degree in After Effects would be to use the Generate>Stroke Effect to reveal the layer.

Of course the promo piece uses very complicated ‘growing lines’ that would take some extra work to achieve.

June 4, 2007 at 10:05 pm in reply to: 2D Wake in front of 3D boat.

In general when working with this sort of effect I’d say… Particles AND a displacement map =)

The wake coming off the bow of a boat is essentially made up of particles, so that’s a good starting place. Get the particles moving correctly then consider using them to drive an adjustment layer with a subtle displacement map and a levels effect (to make the ‘water’ bluish white).

Getting this effect to match up to the moving boat might be difficult, but if you have Particular you can animate the emitter easily if you use a light.

  • Out of curiosity, when you RAM preview what does it say the frame rate is in the Info palette?

June 1, 2007 at 7:31 pm in reply to: Question on 3D photomontage

[bernskie] “hi. i’m trying out the 3d photomontage thingie.”

Not sure what that is, if you could provide a link or give any more information on exactly what it is you’re trying to do you’d get much more helpful responses!

[bernskie] “i have several scenes that i’ve already rendered out however, i’m not sure how to put them together.”

That depends on how you want to put them together, sorry I can’t be more explicit but I’m not sure what is involved in the ‘scenes.’ If they’re finished shots that just need to be cut together or use simple cross dissolves then an NLE is great. If you were hoping to put them together so that they look as though they are a flip book or some other way to integrate them all into the same ‘space’ then AE is probably better.

Just need more info on what it is exactly you’re trying to do.

I’m not aware of any such feature either. It may be that an image was embedded in some other object type that the owner would have more control over (Flash?), but as far as I know every image that is strictly an image is downloadable through a browser.

  • Some particle effects (and I’m pretty sure Particle World is included in this) render a wireframe floor in the default render settings, check the effect for a dropdown menu of render options/settings there should be something like “Full Render.”

Also, what is the purpose of using an adjustment layer if it’s the last layer in the stack? Why not a solid with the effect applied? If it works for you that’s fine, but it seems like a strange way to work =)
