    Please take a look at this.

    Notice the way the people are drawn (black & white people, the ones with threshold effect).

    Could it be just done manually with masks, or is there some kind of trick/technique/effect/transition or all above that would help to create this kind of animation?

    The only way I would know how to accomplish that effect to the same degree in After Effects would be to use the Generate>Stroke Effect to reveal the layer.

    Of course the promo piece uses very complicated ‘growing lines’ that would take some extra work to achieve.

    Yeah. If you had the characters made up in Photoshop and then just animated the mask to reveal them in that way.

    That all that I could think of.
