    I may be mistaken, but the keyframes on your solids should be on the Rotation X, Y and Z properties. Your Orientation should still be 0° all the way around. Have you tried making the 90° rotation using orientation?

    Make sure that when you are importing the image sequence you have the “Photoshop Sequence” check box selected at the bottom of the import dialog.

  • Here’s a way to leave the layers parented, just apply this to the position property of the child layers:

    offset = 3;
    p = toWorld(anchorPoint, time - offset);
    parent.fromWorld(p);

    You even maintain the ability to keyframe the position of the child layers independently. The offset value is in seconds. If you want it in frames you could add a framesToTime(); function.

    If you only have one object buffer pass then it should be the first alpha channel in your PSD and you can interpret it as the alpha channel in After Effects.

    If you have more than one object buffer I’d recommend creating a Photoshop action to split the additional channels out into RGB data in their own Photoshop sequences.

    The fact that they draped white over the green seems to indicate to me that the end result is expected on a white background. If that’s the case then the question becomes: why do you need to key at all?

    If they want the dogs on any background but white then I’m afraid that you’re in for a lot of roto work.

  • Do you get the same error on frames after the 5th frame? Have any layers changed on the 5th frame?

  • Your sample size for the sampleImage() function is pretty large. That may have something to do with it. Also the first part of the last line of your expression is bad practice, instead I’d recommend just using:

    driverLightness * multiplier;

    Try baking the expression before rendering and see if that helps. Select the light’s intensity and go to Animation > Keyframe Assistant > Convert Expression to Keyframes. It may take a while to calculate the frames with the sample size you’ve chosen, but be patient and you should get a good result. This will also allow you to use Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously, which is usually disabled when using the sampleImage() function.

    If you’re still experiencing an error with the baked expression then the problem lies elsewhere.

    When you have no lights in the scene AE internally treats it as an Ambient light at 100% intensity. As soon as you add a light it no longer behaves this way and instead uses the light information on your light layers.

    Try creating an Ambient light at 100% intensity, when you want your spotlight to come on animate the intensity of the spotlight from 0% to 100% and the intensity of the Ambient light from 100% to 0%.

  • It’s hard to know exactly what kind of displacement you’re hoping to achieve from your description. Depending on what you want to end up with the answer could be any one of these:

    FreeForm AE – bundled with AE CS5 & CS5.5, my understanding is that it’s no longer bundled with CS6. Can displace a single layer in 3D using a displacement map. Warps the layer.

    Card Dance – standard AE plugin. Cuts up a single layer into many cards and allows you to displace or rotate them based on layer maps. Wouldn’t warp the cards, just change their apparent 3D position.

    Expressions – could allow you to displace the position of several layers based on the luminance of another layer. Wouldn’t warp the layers, just changes their 3D position.

    Just double checking. You have the NVIDIA CUDA Driver for Mac in addition to the regular drivers?
