I’d normally recommend using a dedicated machine for the database if possible to avoid any slow down of your main machine.

Hi Krishan,

I believe you have an incomplete and/or corrupt Postgres database
installation. When you install Resolve, it installs the Postgres
database
app, and automatically creates a database with the admin and user
logins.

Since you have no user login icons, something failed with the Postgres
install. That’s why you can’t make a new database

The usual fix for this is to rename the /Library/PostgreSQL folder and
reinstall Resolve. Hopefully Postgres will then install properly. So,
in
Finder, rename /Library/PostgreSQL to /Library/PostgreSQL_bad, the
reinstall
the Resolve app, and login and hopefully you will have a guest and
admin user login icon.

If this does not work, let us know. There is a more extensive Postgres
removal process we may have to go through to get it working.

Hey Zack,

Are you using the trim LUT file?

This is in Libary/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve and it is a DPX file.

You must have your playhead on this file when you hit Generate Lut for the generation process to work correctly.

In v9 this will be simplified to a right click on the VSR’s on the timline.

I don’t do that if I can help it but say for example my last job was a short film.

I graded the original files for most of the film but there was about 10-15 VFX shots and for those I did a pre correction grade which was fixing any major issues but no look etc.. rendered to dpx and when I got the shots back from the guys I applied the final look with no issues. Also a 10 bit DPX file should be more than enough for grading.

Hey Stig,

I think you need to take an old school approach on this and do a firstlight and then a bestlight type grade.

In my head the firstlight would be when you grade the original files to a very basic level. So make sure your happy with all your exposure, color temperatures and other bits that you want to adjust from the raw file but not any “creative” grading.

Render everything redcolor and redlogfilm to dpx.

Then when the VFX are finished you can go back into Resolve and do a “bestlight” this is your final grade off the DPX files and hopefully you wont need to worry about any of the red settings and grade happily.

I’m not sure of many places that have such a high spec and are open for rental i’m afraid.

Just another alternative idea, I was grading a music video as part of Den Lennie and James Tonkin’s Music Video Masterclass 2011 and we needed a cinema to grade in due to the amount of students.

The best option we found was to bring our DaVinci system into a cinema and connect via 3g SDI. Was the cheapest option by far and only took about an hour to get set up in the morning.

Sorry I only have alternative ideas but I don’t know many DCP compliant studios!

If you can’t find a DaVinci suite why don’t you go down the old school route of a “test print” ?

When I grade for 35mm release we render out some of the key / difficult scenes. Normally a couple of minutes of film and then when the lab has processed go down to our local cinema and watch it in context.

You can take a few notes and compare what you expected to what you get.

RGB to XYZ luts are great anyway so you should have no issues
