    Well that worked. The 2 things that confused me were;

    1) the note on page 35 of the manual which seemed to imply (at first glance) that 23.98 would be treated as PsF no matter what the record type setting was and

    2) the status display which shows the top line (video) as 720 59.94
    and the second line (audio) as 720 VFR

    But as I said it all imports just fine thank-you very much.

    I think I’ve solved the problem. I’d decided to remove my Matrox card to see if I had the playback problem without it.

    In the process of tearing the computer apart, i discovered that the Kona card was loose. The aluminum bar that holds the pci cards in with the 2 knurled knobs wasn’t tight enough and both the kona and matrox card were flopping around.

    After re-seating the cards, I took a pliers to the knurled knobs and made sure there was no pci wiggling going on in there. I put it all back together and everything seems to be all better.

    Thanks for all the suggestions and the confirmation that it should work.

    It’s a fairly new Mac (MacPro 4.1 Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66Ghz, 8gigs of ram.On the xserve (6 years old) I changed the pre read fetch to the middle option, it was on the 128 option. But the problem occurs on the internal raid as well. PCI slot assignments. Fibre card is slot 4 (dual channel) ATI Radeon is slot 1 kona is slot 4 and matrox compressHD is slot 3

    I’ve uploaded a 345meg sample clip. I have confirmed that this clip has the same playback problems as the other 59.94 fps clips.

    They’re Ki-Pro clips data rate around 17 MB/sec. What kind of data rates do you have? The rates for other clips in this project are pro-res clips converted from HDV tape over firewire 23.98 fps and the data rate is around 7 MB/sec.

    You mean the playback output settings in the A/V Device tab of the audio/video settings menu? I really only have 2 viable alternatives. Either 8 or 10 bit 720 59.94. Any other setting won’t playback or is an unsupported signal for my monitor. 720 8bit or 10bit exhibits the same behavior.

    It’s been a problem over a year. I’m not sure how many driver iterations I’ve been through in that time period. The problem occurs when I playback a clip in the viewer so not a whole lot of settings to consider.

    Top graph is reading one of the 720 59.94 files from the INTERNAL raid. Bottom is from the XSERVE.

    File size is 21gigs. Playback thru FCP with desktop mirror doesn’t work from either location.
