Nicely done. Definitely better than a boring ol’ still. Sometime I like to add a little more subtle movement by using the puppet tool or mesh warp. Doesn’t work in all cases though.

What are your current export settings? I’ve exported to Pro Res before uploading to YouTube in the past, but I’m not sure Vimeo allows that. I probably makes a minimal difference anyway. Adobe Media Encoder has H.264 presets for Vimeo that I typically use now. Bumping up the bitrate may help, but unfortunately Vimeo is going to re-compress whatever you upload anyway so it may not solve the issue.

You could shoot an old TV set in a living room and composite the old footage onto the TV. Or if you want to be really dramatic, composite it on to one of the big screens in Times Square. Just a few ideas. Like Walter suggested, it needs to match the rest of the video. Sometimes simple is better. Maybe just scale it up to fill the screen and add a subtle tint or flicker.

What type of animation are you trying to do? If it’s simple, you could probably just do it in Premiere. To answer your other questions, read up on dynamic link and RAM previews.

Instead of slowing the clip down in your sequence, try right-clicking the clip in your project window and selecting Modify–>Interpret Footage. Change the frame-rate from 60 to 23.98.
