I see the mask on your layer, but I don’t see outline of the mask in your composition window. Are you sure it’s path didn’t get changed to something larger than your footage?

You’re looking to use keyframes to move a image of a bowl of his head. Place your bowl layer on your brother’s head, select the layer and press the “p” key to reveal the layer’s position. Set a keyframe, move forward a few seconds and drag the bowl layer up off your brother’s head. Voila, you’ve just animated the bowl!

The null object should have nothing to do with the visibility of your particles, unless they are positioned off the screen. The fact that you can’t see layers underneath your Particular layer points to a render setting or blend mode issue. Is your Particular layer black? Could you post a screenshot of your settings?

What are your computer specs and what version of AE are you using?

I agree with Dave. Practical effects are the way to go here. You can always enhance it after with some flares or rays, but it can be pretty difficult to create realistic lighting in post that interacts with the scene properly in shots like this.

You can convert your footage to another format such as ProRes or DNxHD using Adobe Media Encoder and import the new version into After Effects.

I don’t know of any tutorials, but to set a marker on a clip, simply select the clip on your timeline and press the “m” key.
