Hey Sam,
your eyes are irritated by the HD-picture. SD-picture allways looks like you have a big blur on the footage – compared to your original HD-quality.

SD-DVD only allows 720×480 for NTSC or 720×576 resolution for PAL as eric discribed.

and television/broadcast is working with the same resolutions. if you playback a DVD on a computer, it is the same – but most software-players scaleing the picture to full screen, and using no good scaling-allgorithms.

you see there is no other way to go – if you would like to have better picture-quality on optical discs you need to go blu-ray.

if you allready exported the clips as animation MOV, it´s quite easy with creative suite 4 or higher. it comes with adobe media encoder, which you can use to transcode your video to elementary audio+video-streams for DVD-authoring.

if you have that 10min. you should use 7.8mBit/s CBR and 192kbit/s dolby AC-3-encoding.

it´s really simple to film in HD and create a SD-DVD from this HD-source.

so you have both possibilities to create Blu-ray and DVD from the same source.

all encoders can transcoders SD-MPEG2 out of HD-content – it´s really simple.

Hi Caleb,
could you please explain how you encode the AC3 audio? I had a few issues creating AC3 with compressor or some issues ocurred while I exported the single audio-tracks out of FCP.

a good idea would be to check the single wav/aif-files and you might install perian to your system, so you can check your 5.1-AC3-file with quicktime. perian will install a quicktime-extention to allow playback of AC-3-files within quicktime.

well,
first of all, you input-material needs to be HD.

then you need create a PSD-file for the menu following encore layer-order and namings.

then you can create your BD-menu, if you like with a moving background as well.

I couldn´t go to much in detail here, but I´m sure there are several tutorials available for this.

the subtitle-ID is nothing that has to do with menu-navigation or something else.

It´s just an ID you´ll see, if you will use the subtitle-button on your remote-control. if you skip through the subtitle you´ll see the ID of each subtitle-stream.

that´s it – a simple use-responce to show the user which subtitle-stream he/she is using.

that´s very simple.

you need to create a new timeline, select your audio+video and drag it to the timeline.

afterwards you can mux the entire DVD-project and you could burn it to DVD-media.

Hi Rion,
I guess your 23GB-file is a video-file and no transcoded audio/video-asset like m2v- and AC3-audio.

Encore could transcode your video-file itself depending on the transcoding-settings you´ve selected in your project-settings, but I would advice to encode the asset prior authoring.

to keep track of the volume you need to make a bitbudget first to be sure not to overfill the disc.
