In Quicktime you need to set the ‘High Quality checkbox to ‘On’. I can’t remember if you need Quicktime Pro to do this or not.
Rest assured that the low quality version is only for viewing -all the quality is there.

The best method to get around this is to export from FCP by reference using the Animation Codec and then transcode to H.264 in Compressor. This has been tested and works.

Generally speaking a 4:3 TV will add the letterboxing for you if it’s capable of dealing with the signal (some will do this automatically, some will need switching soem setups will require that the DVD player will be set to output suitable for 4:3 sets); very old TVs won’t be able to do this.
Just use a 16:9 setting in compressor.__________________________________________________________________

I feel your frustrations.
There are software tools out there that will convert your Quicktime files but due to the very high-end nature of the technology involved and also its also quite expensive.
Have a look at Episode from Telestream. Anybody working with video that needs to be converted should have a copy!

You have obviously no idea whatsoever of what goes into getting pictures and sound to your television set!
Omneons have nothing to do with Beta tape. The reason the MCR will work with such tapes is because they know exactly what they are going to get from them, format-wise and quality-wise.
The reason they are so specific about the types of media they work with and the reason they are so expensive is that they are terribly critical, they need to work 24/7/365 and be totally rock solid with the most demanding types of media.
Non of the the very versatile software players you mention come anywhere close.

You can’t use pure white (255) with most delivery/broadcast-type codecs, the transcode process will knock this back to a broadcast legal value of 235. Nor should you use pure black but rather the lowest legal value of 16.
Remember that you are converting from an RGB value and colour space to the colour space of YUV.

Sorry to be pedantic, but there’s no such thing as MPG1 (or MPG2) the correct acronym is MPEG-1 (Which stands for Motion Pictures Experts Group as I’m sure you know). MPEG-1 can in fact support resolutions up to 4096×4096 at 100Mb/s.

16:9 refers to the DAR – Display Aspect Ratio not PAR – Pixel aspect ratio. Anyhow, MPEG-1 supports a number of DARs and PARs
