The Omneons I’m familiar with work with D10 which is a SMPTE standard otherwise known as IMX. Otherwise it’s MPEG-2 Iframe only, 4:2:2 with 8 tracks of audio, in an MXF wrapper.

You need to speak to Omneon directly to reach a spec for the particular servers you are targeting.

However after exporting via “Export>Quicktime Movie” using both “current settings” and also “HDV 1080i etc”, both times with the “Recompress Frames” unchecked – the video looks terrible after export. The colors are washed out, artifacts introduced, and a bunch of problems that weren’t present in FCP before export, why is this? How can I avoid this since I am, in theory,, not recompressing it during export…? “

Why are you exporting – where are you taking the clip or sequence?
There must be something amiss with your workflow, 1000’s of others don’t have this problem, maybe your sequence settings are incorrect

Is this the only footage you’ve tried? If it is, could you try and shoot some more test footage and try it with that?

JES is indeed good and certainly worth a try, but in my opinion it isn’t a patch on the best that compressor (or indeed Episode) can do.

Ok, sounds like you are in a bit of a mess..

Are you working with PAL 25FPS, NTSC 30FPS OR HD 24FPS?

make sure you have a consistent frame rate throughout your workflow

Obviously your client need ‘educating’

There’s no point in shooting HD, then down converting to SD only to then upscale to an HD or HD ready display.

I’d advise them that all of the masters should be 1080p24, and the SD versions can be taken from those. Otherwise all your RED work (and money) will be wasted.
