[David Dustin] “We typically export from AE as an uncompressed MOV”

[David Dustin] “the file fails to play smoothly”

[David Dustin] “My suspicion is there is something in AE and exporting as an un compressed MOV that is introducing the stuttering. “

Playing back an Uncompressed clip is very difficult even on the most powerful hardware. There’s probably nothing wrong with what AE is producing.

What are your animation render settings in 3DSMax, eg frames per second, Frame size, export file format etc etc

What do you want to do with your rendered animation? Put them on DVD, the web, BluRay…. etc?

    October 21, 2009 at 9:40 pm in reply to: Compress a 30min movie to a 10mb file?

10 Megabit or 10 MegaByte file?

Even if it’s 10MegaBytes that only leaves 45Kbits/sec for the video (no audio obviously)

    Forget it:

    P.S. Use this in future:

[mark wilkinson] “strange that even the apple presets aren’t 856… “

Much as I love Apple, they can’t even come out with a decent H.264 CODEC, theirs being one of the lowest quality and performing ones out there.

P.S. Never rely on a preset unless they are from these guys:

Something strange going on with your system that may be very deep routed.

In the mean time try the PhotoJPEG codec at above 75% quality

One rule of thumb with video is to never ever use odd number frame size dimensions.

The next rule is to aim for a frame size with both sides equally divisible by 16, if that’s not possible, aim for 8.

Ok, well I can see nothing wrong with the settings you gave me. Can you preview in compressor? Maybe there’s something else you have applied in compressor which is causing the issue.

Nothing wrong with those settings, there might be something wrong with your source.

Compressor will always be better than out of QT

    How do you vary it?

Try using a frame size of 856×480, then both sides are equally divisible by 8, which is an important rule to follow.

Have you applied any deinterlacing in frame controls?
