You cannot use a MiniDV camcorder with HDV tapes. The tapes look the same but what goes on them is different.

Like I said in my previous post, HDV uses MPEG-2 compression. It records onto the tape in what’s called ‘Long GOP MPEG-2’

MiniDV SD and HDV at 1080 are both compressed to 25Mbit/s, HDV at 720p is 18Mbit/s. There is no such thing as uncompressed SD DV.

Uncompressed SD video such as ‘D1’ is 270Mbit/s and world of difference from MiniDV or HDV.

To figure out the best workflow, what application do you use for editing (Premiere, Final Cut pro, Vegas etc) and what does the chap supplying you with the footage use?

Squeeze isn’t that deep when it comes to advanced settings. The Help menu is the best place to start (there are a bunch of .htm files installed along with the application) as they cover every setting in Squeeze.

Or is there something specific you can’t get your head around?

Have you tried an end to end?

Did it take as long as it guesstimated?

Encoding WMV is slow (on both Mac and PC) but not that slow.

HDV is MPEG-2, looks like he’s giving you the best he’s got.

Final Cut Studio 3 – all apps with new GUI and a bunch of Leopard specific tools
New shake/motion hybrid, maybe part of FCP
Something about color
New DVDSP supporting Blu-Ray

New Mac Pros with BTO Blu-Ray burners
New Mini Mac Pro – think Quadra 700 – if you can remember them!

Updated displays including 4k biggie.

Sadly, after this years rather dull Macworld, I don’t think we’ll see anything other than a new/updated DVDSP.

Sadly, as far as I know, and I’ve looked hard, there is nothing on the Mac. (or for PCs for under £10k)

The only useful tools are graphics apps like Photoshop, GraphicConverter, COREL etc, that allow batch files to produce graphical differencing. Leaving the rest to maths and the human eye.

You’ll need to test if you can but Apple compressor, DVD studio pro, Episode and MPEG Streamclip could all produce possibly compliant files.
