The answer to that is totally subjective.
Without actually looking at the footage compressed at the different bitrates it would be impossible to say how much better the higher bitrate version look, if at all.
If you can’t see a difference then it’s unlikely that ‘Joe Public’ will.

Too vague, what applications are you using or do have available to use?
What is your source and what is your destination format?
Typically for 4:3 material in a 16:9 you would ‘pillarbox’ the 4:3 clip rather than ‘cutting’ it into the 16:9 frame size.

What was it shot on? DV?
If so, export it as that, if not, export it at whatever the source is/was, no point in adding an additional transcode step.

In my humble opinion, avi is an unreliable file format. Quicktime however is not. If the Quicktime method works, why waste time trying to figure out the avi route?

Easy.
Do a search for ‘Elementary’ relating to MPEG-2 streams in the compressor manual to familiarise yourself with the terminology and process.
Elementary refers to producing separate audio and video files.
You’ll obviously want to start with one of the 90min MPEG-2 presets.

The bottom line is that in order to make an I-frame only 1920×1080 h.264 clip look good, you’ll need a datarate of something in the order of 250Mbit/s. At that point scrubbing will probably melt your hard drives.
To scrub a long-GOP 1080p H.264 clip you’ll need the fastest CPU and or GPU you can get your hands on, even then it’s unlikely to to be totally fluid.

We really need to know what the lowest common denominator is, i.e. what’s the least powerful Mac you are targeting?
Another thing, is your 1024×768 video downsampled HD or upsampled SD, or something else?

I’ve been going to NAB for years but won’t be this year, it’s just not worth the time and expense anymore, especially coming from Europe.
IBC however is a not-to-be-missed show and makes far more sense for us Europeans. IBC is more concentrated and more real-world than the glitzy fan-fare one tends to get at NAB. Massive stands may be impressive to look at but they often get in the way of actually seeing the products on offer.
Although I love Vegas, it’s terribly bad for your health and wallet!

Have you tried using another codec for export like Quicktime Uncompressed or Quicktime MJPEG or PJPEG?
If nothing works then you really should get in touch with Sorenson for support.

Rhozet (Harmonic) have a great product, it would be so much better if they released a Mac version (which they won’t do). Until that imaginary date, Episode rules, on the Mac.
