Yeah, they didn’t fix anything. They implemented a new version of XML that isn’t backwards compatible with FCP, or cross-compatible with Premiere Pro, or even Logic Studio.
They are touting the name “XML” as if it carries the same weight as the XML standard we’re used to hearing about, yet nothing works with it.
They might as well have named it “XML-X” format.

I don’t think it makes an iota of difference what they “learn on.” Lots of FCP and Avid editors (my superiors and myself included) learned editing on Premiere (before it became ‘premiere pro’) and it didn’t change the fact that we learned FCP/Avid when transitioning into the television/film market.
So… FCPX is the new Premiere, maybe. I think it’s great no matter what entry-level tool they use. It doesn’t necessarily change what they end up using if they decide to do editing for a living.

HIghly doubt it. They are pushing their own version of CUDA: OpenCL. That should run on Nvidia or AMD cards alike, but I doubt Nvidia is enthusiastic about it.

You will need to bring the SWF into After Effects. Then export into prores4444 and and it should preserve the alpha.

Honestly, once you spend a few hours with AE you’ll wonder why you ever bothered with motion. It’s similar to switching over to Avid, you can’t half-ass your learning and workflow, you really have to all in “the avid way” — it’s similar if you want to use PrP. They’ve worked really hard to make the AE integration tight – you might as well benefit from it. Trying to have one foot in the FCP door and the other in Adobe is only give you leg cramps :p

Avid will look at the .htm files and assign TOD timecode to the clips — exactly the same as what the FCP log and transfer plugin does.

You can network them together and share files, but you aren’t going to get them sharing displays, or tag-teaming render jobs without unnecessary complications.

When it comes to actual ‘editing’ you can tell that Avid was designed by editors, and FCP was designed by “designers.” Avid’s editing is clearly easier and faster once you get used to it.
When it comes to effects, you can tell that Avid was programmed by those same editors, who unfortunately had no clue how to do it as effectively as the Apple/Premiere guys who had a background in effects and graphic design.
