    yeah i think creating an expression would be the way to go. Something like the DIGIEFFECTS BESERK: de starfield plugin would do the trick as well. All their plugins are pretty cool for kiche stuff like that.

    I found that Flash can really be handy when converting images and movies to vectors. From memory it’s called trace bitmap. Then you have control over the amount of detail you can give the vectors. If that doesn’t do what your after, then Adobe’s Streamline is the good ole’ fashion way. These methods can then be imported into AE.

    Or you could hand draw you 30 million frames 🙂

    I know this is a AE forum but Apples Motion has some great preset smoke particle effects which are excellent when you have tight deadlines. On the other hand I think the forum section has a good tute on creating smoke.
