Sorenson Squeeze uses Flip4Mac (on the Mac side) to create WMV. A full compression app such as Squeeze adds many more features of course. It’s still using Flip4Mac plugin.

Won’t ASFView show you average and max bit rates in addition to the bit rate in the metadata? Kinda makes ASFView “weak” if it can’t show you actual bit rate.
Encoders like Episode can show you frame by frame bit rate. Would be nice if such tool existed on the Mac as a stand alone. -

Not sure what you mean by the above. Flip4Mac is a Quicktime Component that will work using FCP and Quicktime Conversion to create WMV. I know of no other plugin that does this. What “better” thing are you looking for?
You might consider a full compression app like Episode or Episode Pro which can convert to many different codecs.
Somewhere along the line you HAVE to take the step to go from a .mov to a wmv if your goal is WMV . . . short of editing on a PC.
Flip4Mac Player Pro will allow you to edit WMV in FCP but you’ll still have to render.

You’re in trial mode. Did you purchase Studio/StudioPro/StudioProHD? If so, make sure to activate from an Admin account or it can revert back to trial.

Current release version of Flip4Mac is 2.1.0.33. It works well with Squeeze 4.3.3. Flip4Mac still has a general issue with 2 Pass VBR encodes though. 1.0.6 has no problem with 2 Pass VBR.
Episode is a great app. Steep learning curve but it does almost everything and does it well.

You’re using the free Flip4Mac Player which has the trial of Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD. Depending on your needs, you should purchase Flip4Mac Studio (1 pass presets only), Studio Pro (1 Pass you can adjust and create settings), Studio Pro HD, (2 Pass encoding and HD frame sizes). Flip4Mac also works in Compressor, Squeeze, Cleaner. Episode also does good WMV encoding on the Mac and it’s a full compression app like the previous 3 mentioned.

You’d need Cleaner 6.5.1 to work with Quicktime 7.1.3. Much, if not most of Cleaner 6 and 6.5.0 is broken above Quicktime 7.0.4. 6.5.1 does have export to iPod presets (both H.264 and MPEG4) but I haven’t tried them yet. The version of Compressor 2.x that comes with FCP 5.1.x also has iPod presets that you can customize. As Charles mentions, Episode is a good choice too (and has iPod presets).

Depends what’s in the AVI. I’ve been handed DV AVI files and import and edit as is. I’ll get a format warning in FCP but I can edit DV AVIs without rendering.
If Quicktime Pro can play whatever is inside the AVI (and that depends) than it may be able to convert it to your timeline codec .mov.

Stuart’s got the best answer for a Mac user. Episode is FAST.
Flip4Mac does run in Cleaner so you can use it’s filters and control to Mac WMV9 in Cleaner. You’d need to make sure you have Cleaner 6.5.1 to be compatible with Quicktime 7.1.3. If you only have Cleaner 6 then 6.5.1 is a paid upgrade. If you have to upgrade Episode is money well spent although it’s got a steeper learning curve than other compression apps. I’d also mention that Flip4Mac 2.1.0.33 is much faster than previous versions on PPC Macs but Episode is faster.
