Win Media Player compatibility
Posted by Jon Boffa on October 28, 2006 at 4:43 amI need to export a sequence video to a small file that can be played on Windows Media Player. I tried a variety of options via Compressor, all of which won’t open in WMP. Is there a certain file type or other conversion that I need to do in order to let those pc folks play it?

October 28, 2006 at 5:38 amzrb that’s pretty arrogant he probably doesn’t have that option.
The best bet at present, I think, is Flip4Mac and export as wmv.

October 28, 2006 at 6:19 amThanks for tip.
It worked! I opened the file in QuickTime, export to (what now appears) wmv. file, BUT I can’t seem to get the 4 minute clip to save as wmv for more than :30 seconds of it for some reason. I checked all settings and there isn’t anything that I see which would limit the export to only :30 of it. Any idea why this is doing this? Thanks again.

October 28, 2006 at 6:25 amFor the record, I am a “pc” person whenever I’m not editing, which is when I choose to work on my G5 (I even hugged a fellow pc user today…).
I was hoping for what I paid for my Mac system I’d be able to output something that the most popular media viewer in the world could open. Asking my clients/friends to download software isn’t the best answer, but thanks anyway. -

October 28, 2006 at 7:14 amI can 2nd flip4mac. We just bought the Studio HD package. We used with great results creating 960×640 clips which play beautifully.
We used compressor to do the batch conversions after setting up a custom setting.
May I say, if you install the free flip4mac goodies, cleaner was able to build up to a 640×480 size WMV, but the controls were lacking as far as really tweaking the data rate to higher vales.
The lesser cost versions of the package might be enough, but we felt the full access HD versions would prove a better long term investment.

October 28, 2006 at 12:11 pmYou’re using the free Flip4Mac Player which has the trial of Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD. Depending on your needs, you should purchase Flip4Mac Studio (1 pass presets only), Studio Pro (1 Pass you can adjust and create settings), Studio Pro HD, (2 Pass encoding and HD frame sizes). Flip4Mac also works in Compressor, Squeeze, Cleaner. Episode also does good WMV encoding on the Mac and it’s a full compression app like the previous 3 mentioned.

October 28, 2006 at 2:54 pmI woundt do as far as saying that windows media player is the most populer one out there, just because it automaticaly comes on all windows computers douse not make it populer.
And like I said they probably already have quicktime on there computer because if they already install iTunes which actualy is a populer program quicktime was installed at the same time.
if you want to spend money to let then play it fine but sence they probably already have quicktime (and its free if they dont) you can do it for free

Windows Media Player is the most widely used player in the marketplace by a long, long, long shot, and it is very popular because it works quite seamlessly in the Windows environment. The quality and file-size of WMV is also very good. QT, Flash and WMV are all excellent now, and if you’re biased against any of them you’re eventually going to lose business to those around you offer their clients every flavor of web video.
