  • FCP, cleaner and windows media, not a happy family?

    Anyone know anything about this….

I’m in the middle of a huge debate at work…we are working for a client who needs 150 short windows media videos all about 5 – 10 minutes in length…

…our company runs FCP…however we were told that if we use cleaner, on our macs, to compress the uncompressed self contained quicktime movies into windows media files they will look terrible…the funny thing is, they are right…the files look awful…not that I expect any great things from windows media files but these look quite bad…

…so…they said it’s an issue of using a mac to compress to a windows file…and on top of that…using FCP…they say we need to export all the quicktime files and then import them into sony vegas, apply several filter effects and then export from vegas to the final windows media file…this will get an acceptable file…

    *whew*

…and because I only know avid and FCP, veas is like a forigen language to me…i cannot even get vegas 6 to do a batch export…

has anyone ever encountered this problem on a mac compressing quicktime movies into windows media? how did you beat it without using two programs, two computers and exprorting, importing and then exporting/compressing? i say there i a way to do it in one step, create a good looking windows media file but everyone in the office says there isn’t….but i cannot prove or dis prove this because i never deal with windows media…or vegas for that matter…oh and editing on vegas isn’t a possibility either…the computer we have running it couldn’t support all the media/processing…

i dish out huge thanks to anyone who can shead some light on this issue…i’m sorry i double posted because i don’t even know if this is a FCP issue or a vegas issue…i appologize…but this sounds nuts…what kind of problem is this? I don’t even know…

thanks a ton in advance –
    Nate

    Nate,

Buy Flip4Mac and you can export good looking WMV files from FCP and/or Compressor.

I agree with David! Flip4Mac WMV Studio Pro is the way to go, and it solves all of your problems. And here’s the real benefit – its cheaper and no additional programs to run!

And, I hate to say it, but Cleaner sucks — always has, always will. Its never been a priority at Discreet/Autodesk since the day they acquired it, and its one of the least elegant apps out there, but other than that its perfect.

Cleaner for Mac only supports up to WM7. Do as David suggested and you can
compress to WM9, a far superior codec.

Cleaner used to be a great product. Always sucked?! When WM7 and QT SV3 Pro was the best you could get,
Cleaner rocked! Version 5 was awesome, then 6 came along and sucked big time.

    Here’s my take on this:
If your client needs that kind of volume, do yourself and your crew a favor and just buy a little PC. The encoding tools from Micrtosoft for WMV are free. All you do is feed it files.

Transcoding to wmv on our G5s is a terribly lengthy process because it really does require two passes to get the best images from Flip4Mac. It’s freakin’ glacial!

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

What you need is Episode or Episode pro (formerly Compression Master) go to this url https://www.flip4mac.com/episode.htm and try the demo its free to try. This software does almost every format there is and more. The best thing is its wicked fast even on G5’s but is blindingly fast on a Mac intel machine, even a Intel duo core mac mini!! Try it You Will Like it!! It is a very good replacement for crappy old Cleaner! Good Luck Stuart cummings

Stuart’s got the best answer for a Mac user. Episode is FAST.
Flip4Mac does run in Cleaner so you can use it’s filters and control to Mac WMV9 in Cleaner. You’d need to make sure you have Cleaner 6.5.1 to be compatible with Quicktime 7.1.3. If you only have Cleaner 6 then 6.5.1 is a paid upgrade. If you have to upgrade Episode is money well spent although it’s got a steeper learning curve than other compression apps. I’d also mention that Flip4Mac 2.1.0.33 is much faster than previous versions on PPC Macs but Episode is faster.
