  • Outputting WMV files?

Posted by Eric Lochstampfor on November 16, 2006 at 3:01 pm

    Hey all,

Just wondering what a good app or plug in that will allow FCP to output .WMV? I know Flip for Mac will do that but was wondering if there were other/better ones out there.

I specifically not looking for an app that will convert .mov files to .wmv files, largely due to the fact that it adds an extra step and more time to my work flow, to output one type of file when your goal is an entirely different type of file.

Any info anyone can share would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you mean by the above. Flip4Mac is a Quicktime Component that will work using FCP and Quicktime Conversion to create WMV. I know of no other plugin that does this. What “better” thing are you looking for?

You might consider a full compression app like Episode or Episode Pro which can convert to many different codecs.

Somewhere along the line you HAVE to take the step to go from a .mov to a wmv if your goal is WMV . . . short of editing on a PC.

Flip4Mac Player Pro will allow you to edit WMV in FCP but you’ll still have to render.

Funny you should ask about this… Filp4Mac is the leading software for this, however I should also mention that Sorenson’s Squeeze will do this and MUCH more… They just announced a new version this moring in fact, and I have intentions to review it for the COW… I’ve long been a fan, and this new release has not only new features, but incredible speed improvements… https://www.sorensonmedia.com

Sorenson Squeeze uses Flip4Mac (on the Mac side) to create WMV. A full compression app such as Squeeze adds many more features of course. It’s still using Flip4Mac plugin.

True indeed. Makes sense that Sorenson would use a plugin from the leading app…

It’s the speedup of the encoding time that interests me a LOT…

GEEEEZZZ! I freakin knew it. For the last week I’ve been trying to buy Sorenson for flash. Macmall, clubmac and others had it listed for 119 bucks. NOT the upgrade. But nobody but nobody had a single copy in stock and I felt an upgrade coming. Unfortunately I needed it Monday, and I had to purchase the download version from Sorenson for the full $249. Hopefully they’ll have something special for me to upgrade. I can truly say I waited until the last minute. Oh well, it’s paid for itself already.

We recently bought the Flip4Mac Studio HD, needing to produce .wmv files in (4 ) sizes.

720×480, 960×640, 1280×720, 1920×1080. We then burned these files to a data-DVD so the client could chose which size worked best.

We have found we get the best results right out of FCP, QT or Cleaner 6. When using Cleaner 6.5.1 or Compressor 2, the files are just a little soft. We have not figured out why. In most cases it’s very easy just to output the FCP timeline directly to .wmv. However, it’s also easy to output a master file in the FCP session format, and then use QT to make a .wmv version, and so far the quality of this method has been the same.

Give the folks at Sorenson a Call… maybe they’ll help out here.
